Hi From California

Post by Ninja 85 »

Hello all, Im new here. I Thought I would join this group since I just bought my first Roadster..Its is a 1970 1600 Sora Blue and no rust runs great for $500 last night..Im no stranger to Datsuns but this is my first Roadster..I was on the search for a second car when I spoted this only a few miles from where I live. Now I can start my engine swap project on my 94Toyota PU this winter. I am going to be installing a lexus 32v V8 which will make this a evil fun truck..But back to Baby Blue (as I affectionately call her now) Im torn as to how I will rix her up wether stock or a street legal road race car..So many choices..Either way I really dig Baby Blue

We need more pictures, and you need to put your location in your profile.

Thanks Tom, Updated my profile..Yes I have found alot of usful info so far..The only thing that buged me about the purchase was that the car was bought by the former owner out of a wrecking yard therefor it was given a salvage title..it was never wrecked or tore up just was missing the engine and a H20 was installed..It is a low prod # for 1970 #0026..Thats why im torn as to restore it back orignal or just go for it and build it up with a newer innercooled turbo engine and 5spd, flare out the fenders and nice wide wheels and tires and paint it like a old BRE with my old racing number..Here is a couple more pics

Welcome! and nice find, great price for a runner.

looks like someone already started doing some flaring, but in any case, for a lo-buck driver while your engine swap takes place, great ride.
Keep in mind hardtops are a plentiful down here (SoCal) to get you thru the winter months without having to spring for a new top. I get a LOT of use out of my tonneau, and I found out the hard way, years ago, that it holds water! (had a 2+ inch puddle out in the middle, right over the center zipper, and stayed dry inside)
Parts from us? I have found better luck getting parts from Central California junkyards, (near Stockton) where the real estate isn't so outrageous that they have to turn cars so quick.

keep us up to date, always good to see another "rolling resto",

Hi folks and thanks for the welcome's. Well today was an aventure to say the least..Went down to DMV to get the title and reg and wow what a mess..It hasnt been reg since 1986 and no one bothered to non-op it..UGGGG..now I know why it was a good deal..$600 later ( So much for a paint job for a while) and a tatrum I got it all squared away and was able to keep the original blue and yellow plates..Man a lot has changed since being gone from Calif for 7yrs..What the heck do you mean I have to pay an extra fee to keep the plates that were assigned to the car in the first place? Salvaged? what do you mean it was salvaged? The car doesn't have one iota mark on it to even call it a totaled loss let alone any evidence of any damage..Ive been a mechanic for almost 30yrs and I know how to look a car over with a fine tooth comb..( Used to build mustang show cars when younger) So now I get to play a history game and get the DMV to give a compleate history of it to find out when and by whom it was totaled by and get it resended and have the salvage removed..Yes there is a way but it is major hoops to jump over. Unfortunately for DMV they have butted heads with a reletless German/Scotish guy that was raised as a Redneck. lol
This is going to be rough now with funds since I am on a fixed income..So a really great deal on a hardtop to get me thru the winter would be a Godsend..Im going to drive the car home tomorow night and get the Brake and Light inspection Friday..I Did get to tell my 10yr old about it tonight and he was real excited. Told him if "daddy'' still has it in 6yrs you can have it..He replyed he wants the hotrod PU with the V8..lol..
Anyway thats about all for now but I will keep all posted with the latest..Thanks again for welcoming me into y'alls group

Actually, it sounds like you worked a minor miracle with the DMV!
Congratulations on your victory over "the system" at least!

Welcome. Just wanted to mention how cute your nickname for the car is, "Baby Blue".
Since you are a mechanic, the odds of your completing the restoration of the car are quite good, as opposed to those of us who fumble, bumble and stumble along...
Just to mention there are many nice Roadster owners in your general vicinity who can help you also.
Standard advice:Have a BBQ and they will come LOL
There are occasional fun runs as well when the car is running.
You can also start a thread and then post your progress, with pics as you make progress. It is always a help and inspiration to others.
Good luck and have fun!

Well I thought id post an update..got the car in the garage after driving it a bit and discovered that it was stumbling real bad. It's been sitting for a long time so I figure it has to be the fuel system. Going to pull the tank and clean it real good check all the lines and replace all the rubber hoses and take a good look at the carbs for varnishing..old fuel has a tenency to do that to carbs..A little spooked on rebuilding the twin SU's done plenty of Q-jets Holleys and hatachi's with good results but never twin SU's but gotta start sometime right? Anyway I let y'all know how things turn out..

The SU's really are pretty refreshingly simple and I bet you do just fine! Good luck.
