Probably out of a junkyard. Straight-8s were the norm before the V engines really took over. I guess the thinking at the time was "You need more power? Add cylinders and displacement."

Unfortunately I don't have more images of the 240. It wasn't until I got home that I realized what I had and how it applied. I was going to shoot, shoot, shoot, but instead ended up walking around and looking.

If anyone fancies themself a "real" gearhead, I heartedly endorse any one of the three events on the Salt. You will see backyard, cobbled-together vehicles, factory and University efforts and everything in between. (The year the Chevy HHR was released, GM Performance was there with a factory model. Result? 227mph.)

Speed Week (by the SCTA) seems to have the largest turnout, and the $15 to get in for the day is easily worth it.

As a side note, I tried to find which class a 1600 runs in, and it appears that the world speed record for that class is a hair over 150mph. Anyone care to guess what the aerodynamics of a Roadster are at a buck-and-a-half?

(I have more pix of other things out there, and I'm slowly adding them to Photobucket as I have time.)

What we have there is a Buick Valve-In-Head Fireball Dynaflash Eight. They tend to be a BIT torquey :D

About the same as a chicken coop. Probably gain 15 MPH if it had no windshield.

I had a Dodge Dart up to 150+ (calculated) on bias ply tires, back when I was young and immortal, so a brick with enough horsepower (money) can be a very fast brick.

For those wondering the math, 73 Dodge Dart Sport, 340 4 speed 400+ HP 25.0 inch tire 3.23 rear 22.5 MPH per thousand RPM, just under 7000 rpm on a Sun tach in top gear, then subtracted 10% fudge factor and because the number was just way too scary. Yes it was a public road, and thank God the light was green. That was a nasty deathtrap of a street car, but at least this one had disc brakes. The Hurst shift lever from that car is going in the 64 1500.
