New Roadster owner in California

Hi everyone, I'm Corey.

It seems like a little over a month ago now, I contacted Mike Young (who I'm sure many of you know) about potential project cars he might have. He mentioned that there was a yellow '67 that was sort of 'on the fence', and had a trashed body, but very little rust. I drove up to Mike's Roadster Ranch and picked it up, along with most of the sheet metal parts (fenders and doors) that were just shot on her poor body.

In the time since then, I've started to strip down the car in preparation for a total restoration. Since I'm young and foolish, it's anyone's guess what actually ends up happening. I returned the 1600's running R16 to Mike in exchange for the makings of an R20 stroker. (Again, too young maybe to be 'old fashioned' but the sight of an SR20 in a Roadster turns my stomach).

The plan is to use the U20 carbs and a 5 speed transmission (which I still need to source), cut the head down until I have compression in the 10s, have an exhaust fab'd, and learn to weld to fix the 3 rust holes I've found so far. I'm torn between painting the car silver and redoing the interior in red, and keeping the interior black and painting the car Toyota Blue Ribbon Metallic (8T5).

Currently have the 5 main block on the floor of the garage, paint cured, Flexhone on the way. If anyone knows of a machine shop in the Bay Area that's stone cold crazy, and willing to cut down my R16 head as well as cutting the nose off my U20 crank, I'd love a referral.

Sounds like fun, but don't cut the head. Put 1600 pistons in and that should get you close.

The head has already been cut a fair bit; I can't remember how much exactly. I've also got two(!) sets of U20 pistons, and no R16 pistons at all. Also, I've heard that you had to modify the piston skirts on the domed piston to use it with the U20 crank and rods?

In any case, Mike seems to know his stuff ( ), and we picked out a head with the knowledge that I was gonna cut it, so I believe it was one that was already marked as having been cut too much for conventional use. I really need to cut it out with the armchair mechanicking, and actually get out the dial caliper and measure it.

I'm of course open to options, and prepared to be wrong about a bunch of things, but keep in mind, I'm just a po' college student; ain't got a lot of money, just lots of elbow grease.

Welcome Cory, is that yellow the original color? maybe Alving would like to post some photos of nice looking yellow/black roadsters, i think it looks nice in that combo and i like when they are kept in the original colors.

My favorate yellow is

PURE BASE YELLOW

Its yellow without and additives like red, or green.
Its pretty close to the last roadster in Alvin's post. It might even be PURE BASE YELLOW...I see green in the color...my car has a little red even though I told the painter I want pure base yellow.

Any paint supply shop will know.

PS: pure base yellow is very easy to match at a later date. LOL

I'm partial to the original yellow 665, which is much more of a pale cream then the ones in Alvin's pictures

That is one nice color, i think a car should be the stock color if possible, but i must admit that my poo brown Z will most likely get a color change, when that time come and that 665 is one of the colors i'm considering.

Wow! Such enthusiasm for the yellow roadster!

Regrettably, the yellow on the car is the result of a pay'n'spray in San Francisco a number of years ago. If you dig down a little (or open the trunk, or hood), you can see that the original color was none other than 666 Gray, as near as I can tell.

I'm trying to get away from gray and silver vehicles. My commuter Honda, my first ZX, half of my current ZX, and technically this 67 have all been silver! My bike is red, but since it's not running, I'm not counting it.

I'm still undecided, so it may end up gray, but... Here are a few pictures of the heathen Toyota paint I'm considering (just in case ):

Toyota has a really cool Dark Green Mica on the camrys pictured above. It looks almost black until the light hits an edge and then it has a bright green shimmer with maybe a touch of gold? It is really impressive.

Well, that pretty much seals the deal! I really like that dark blue on the roadster. I know it's not stock, and I wrestled with it morally... but at the end of the day, I'm the one who's gonna spend the most time looking at it; I may as well like the way it looks!
