North West Datsun Enthusiasts July Meeting. Roadster night.

Post by ted heaton »

It was Roadster night for the July 16 NWDE meeting.
We had great weather and a record turnout of 13 roadsters.
Also a wonderful 1962 320 Datsun truck converted to a working (light loads!) tow truck.

Great turn out, looks like fun with great weather too.
Love the tow truck! The one silver ('70?) Roadster with factory wheels/hubcaps looks to have had a little accident - did it wet itself?
Hope it was OK!

The 70 pictured last, can anyone identify the Paint Code?

A friend of mine wants to paint his 240Z that color, and when we looked at paint chips from the late 60's, purportedly the Datsun page, none of the colors matched that 70's light green metallic shade.

Thanks in advance,
E

Tom.
Good eye on the 70 coolant problem. Owner John V. had a sudden serious water pump leak.
We tried to convince him that a "real" roadster guy would drive it home (with frequent water fill up stops!)
but he did not go for it. He has cheap towing coverage. See last new picture for the ultimate roadster embarrassment.

Enrique.
I have not had a response from Pete about the color code for his 70.

Ohhh nooo! Not the trailer!
It's gone from a driver to a trailer Queen. :-)
Depending on how far he had to go, I'm with you, I'd have driven it!
The trailer does not look like a professional rig, friend of a friend or relatives?

Ted
Thanks for the follow up.

I've also tried to get the information through another member, and maybe I should re-state that this is not for a Roadster, but for a Z. At that, the Z owner isn't yet convinced that it's what he wants, but in his opinion it's one of the best looking colors he's seen in a while (he likes silvery hues).

Tom
That trailer is familiar to me from my time living in Iowa and Michigan. It's not uncommon to see it on the farms to transport vehicles from one acreage to another. It's biggest advantages are, dual axles, plenty of tie down options, thick wood floor, some even come with auxiliary brakes, lights and a very low angle of entry coupled with the tilt option. Definitely easier to use than some of the "professional" rigs you can rent. If it weren't for it's size (they can probably have 2 roadsters on at the same time), and the need for a good size truck to tow, I'd own one.

I should have clarified, by "not professional" I meant that it was probably not a paid towing service, and was wondering if he got help from a friend with a trailer. The trailer itself is actually pretty nice and I agree with your assessment!

Gotcha!

As far as a "professional" service, I recommend AAA Plus.

I know Hagerty, and other auto insurance companies have towing riders on their policies, but AAA Plus will allow you to have your car towed HOME without a lot of questions from a long road trip (up to 100 miles). Other roadside assistance programs not only limit how far they will tow you, but insist you get towed to a service station or mechanics shop, as is the case with AAA basic (although they will tow you home if you're within the mileage restriction - 5 miles).

Sorry for the blatant plug...

Sid.
Here is a good story for the Green 66 with the chrome wheel arch trim.
About 12 years ago my son (driving a tow truck then) towed this roadster from 1 house to another.
He gave me the owners contact info. The owner did not want to sell. Was going to get it going, Blah, Blah, Blah.
I contacted him twice over about 6 years and same story.
Long time local roadster owner and friend, Joe S., wanted a low windshield car for a more of a regular driver.
He has a restored 68 2000 with the "too nice to drive" problem.
Joe called on the 66 about 4 years ago and now the owner was ready to sell.
A very nice rust free car. Joe just completed a full 1600 engine and 5 speed trans rebuild.
The non stock green paint is good and he does not have to worry about chipping a new paint job.
The chrome trim was on the wheel archs and it seems to fit and grows on you.
Joe does not want to take it off.

Tom and Enrique.
The tow was arranged thru AAA plus. They used what is generically called a "cheap tow".
A large pickup pulling a large trailer. About half the cost of a regular tow truck.

Ted;
They may have called it a "Cheap tow", but given the choice between one of those trailers, and a flatbed truck that raises the car 4' or so up a steep incline with a winch as opposed to it's own power or muscle power... I'll take Cheap!

Ditto, plus I like cheap if it doesn't mean bad!
