The Resurrection of SPL 28978

Post by MSmethers »

Hey all, been a lurker for some time, but I wanted to start a thread on my swap/rebuild of my 70 311.
For the purists that visit this section, I acquired the car as a rusted shell only. No motor/trans came with it. In fact, the PO would have taken it to the boneyard if I hadn't come along. So I don't feel an injustice is being done. I certainly appreciate the purist line of thinking, my next project is a bone stock #'s matching 67 GTO and I'm a purist when it comes to my Pontiac. That being said, here we go.

The bones; complete car minus motor and trans, and a taste of the cancer.
Image
Image

Rebuilt 3.4 block and trans out of a 94 Camaro (with another project behind, apologies for the shameless horsepower plug)
Image

3.5 Heads and LIM from 2005 GM, modified with larger combustion chambers for 11.3 SCR with the RWD pistons, LS6 valve springs (to accomodate the custom ground Comp Cams grind), viton valve seals, new valves etc.
Image

From a 2004 Impala 3.4, UIM and fuel rail. All necessary mods made to crossmember and tunnel
Image
Image
And yes, it clears the stock hood.
Image
Image

First attempt at building headers. Have access to a TIG, but can't for the life of me pick up the skill required to lay a decent bead, so the final welding will be farmed out.
Image

Still have to figure out a way to make the flange removable so I can pull headers without pulling the motor AND lifting the body.
Image

I'll be running the stock FI set-up with a MegaSquirt ECM. Alot of other little things have been done. I'll update more when I have more time.
Anyway, that's it for now. Hoping to have the other side built, install fuel system, temp wiring and fire the motor up in a week or two.

So, what sort of hp and torque numbers are we looking at here? Trans is GM 5 spd? Any thoughts on the diff? It's gonna roast one tire!

Thanks for the welcome all.
Yes, GM 5 speed, donated by the Camaro.
The stock 3.4 has 160 hp, 200 ft lbs. The "air dyno" tells me I'll be 220-250 hp. Torque I really haven't a clue. I plan on scheduling some dyno time to get the tune right. The fuel and timing maps have to be pretty good in order to run the pump gas I'll be running. That's waaaaaay off in the future though.

Should be a tire roasting, sizzle fest. I foresee an upgrade to the diff/housing in pretty short order.

Location added, sorry, thought I'd already done that.

Time for a quick update.
Got a bit done in the last week or so.

Headers are back from being welded up.
Fuel tank sumped and plumbed.
Image

Radiator temporarily placed to determine size and shape of brackets required to lay it down as need for hood clearance. I had to have a filler neck welded on, and the holes welded from the overflow that came in the upper tank. In this picture you can also see the PowerMaster 100 amp alternator fits well in front of the left cylinder head. Idler pulley is on the other side to accomodate the CCW waterpump. Nice and compact.
Image
Image

Here you can see the belt/pulley set up. Fuel lines are all plumbed.
Image

I couldn't stand it and plugged in the necessary components to the MegaSquirt ECM, locked the timing at 10*, checked with with the timing light. Reset TunerStudio to let the Spark bin control timing, flipped the switch, pushed the button and the dang thing started!!! Ran it for 30 seconds or so and shut it down. No tuning done and a new flat tappet cam, I ran it up to 2k rpm for a quick sec and it stumbled a bit getting there, but, oooohhh, those open headers and rowdy cam! Now I gotta find an upper radiator hose and fashion a tensioner bracket for the alternator and I can get some time on it.

I'm way stoked.....

Man you got a pretty good shoe horn there. The motor seems to fit in there pretty well, I'm amazed!
Keep the pictures coming, Thanks!

Thanks guys, progress is going to slow down after this weekend however. Arnie's threats of Federal Minimum Wage (approx 70% paycut if it goes through) has me scrambling for side work and I have a truck to paint at the shop. Gotta pay for this science experiment somehow!

Working on getting some video of it. All I have is a cell phone and digital camera. I tried last weekend with the cell, but was total crap. My camera is capable of 1080p video, but the files are frickin HUGE. I will get something up tho. I'm going to try and get a little closer on the tune this weekend after I build the plug wires and start on the exhaust. I have to get the WB 02 sensor in before I work on the fuel/spark maps. Running pig rich and already fouled a set of plugs.

Exhaust;
Plan A- under the body, exterior of the frame rails. I don't want to see the exhaust from the side, so heatshields will have to be fabbed so I can tuck the muffler up against the floorboard. Also have to modify the forward body mount to tuck it up against the firewall/floor. I'm not sure where the tip will exit yet. Would like to get back inside the frame rails at some point, but it doesn't look too promising.

Plan B- Rebuild the headers into Zoomies right outta da hood! :smt099

On an unrelated topic, I have to figure out why the fuel system isn't holding pressure after the pump stops. Drops to zero immediately. No visible leaks. It may be the way I have the regulator plumbed, but I don't think so.

Added a short video of the motor running. No tune on the ECU yet, the Edelbrock "EFI" fuel pump doesn't incorporate a checkvalve, so no pressure for the prime pulse. You would think that a pump designed for fuel injection would hold pressure. Or at least give some indication in the description. I had a few (not so nice) words with Edelbrock tech line. Apparently their Pro Flo fuel injection systems run the pump continuously or have a check valve within the filter.

I had to rework the radiator placement. The steering centerlink is killing me. With the rad cap on, the hood wouldn't close completely! DOH!

Anyway enough chit chat.
