Welch Plug???

OK folks,

I need someone with an R16 to go out and look at the engine for the "what the hell goes in this hole in the block" ? caper.

Standing on the drivers side of the car the hole in question will be to your top right rear of the block, just under the head and directly under the last stud for the exhaust manifold.

Jorge, I feel for ya man....I see why you needed help remembering where everything went....heck, my engine has been down for approx. 8 months....I have trouble remembering something for 8 minutes :oops:

I forgot to mention that I've ordered a 30mm welch plug to go in there from Motor Power, just want to make sure.

If its a pipe theaded hole located about 5" from top of block, that would be for the drain cock (or drain plug) to the waterjacket.
Drain cocks were used up to engine serial R4000, but I've seen them installed them in in the R6000 range.

I concur with the draincock. I went out and looked at mine (eng # 55xxx) and the only hole on the driver's side of the block has the drain in it. No manifolds to get in the way, either.

I believe that the drain cocks are a bit further forward and below the hole to which Scott is referring. The hole that Scott describes sounds like the hole for the road draft tube. That was used on early cars (1500s and early 1600s under about engine 25000 or so). To be sure, check to see if there is a bolt hole in the center of that 30mm hole. It would be for mounting the road draft tube. Check out Rallye's site for details:

BTW, the one shown there is most likely a 1600 unit. The two that I have removed off of 1500s are slightly different in shape...

Oh, Scott, you can just plug it if you are using the aircleaner vented valvecover setup.

Thanks all for the great info. Here is what I have. There is indeed a threaded hole in the center of this 30mm hole in the block. But my engine number is 118xxx, much newer than the others mentioned. So I will surmize that Datsun left it set up for either/or. I do not remember nor have a road draft tube and have always used the hose running from the valve cover over to the air cleaner. So......I will plug it with the welch plug I ordered today from Motor Power. These guys, by the way, have been very courteous and helpful. The freeze plug set they sent me did not contain a 30mm plug, probably because the H20 forklift block does not take that plug, I don't know. PLUS, the gasket set is correct in all respects but I got this Huge front seal that no way will go in my front cover. Danny at Motor Power had me read the number off my old seal and sure enough he had one that he said was for the old, old, old Datsun forklift engines. Interesting stuff.

Got the head studs from Dean today and they are very well made. I hope to have the engine together by this time next week.

Nissan did some strange things back then, my car is a 69 by serial# but it is a 68 by the wiring harness and fenders. Go figure.

I bet you truly know how my many postings originated! :? I went to my car ('68 1600 engine #R63232) and I agree with those who suggested the drain valve there...........I am sure that by now you already know this and don't need the input, but it just felt good to be answering "what the hell is this..." rather than asking !!!!!!!
