Looking for help in Cumming Georgia

Post by thubbard »

I bought a 68 2000 last fall. Spent the winter stripping out the interior, replacing the rear wheel cylinders and the front calipers. The car runs but I can't get the carbs tuned. I have read most of the procedures for tuning them but can't seem to get them synchronized. The prevoius owner installed a 3.5-5 psi electric fuel pump which seems to provide the proper delivery. The car is not road worthy yet so I am looking at a tow to a shop where my '78 280 was worked on or some help from a local knowledgeble owner.

Please help!

I had to Google Map Cumming to see where you were! That's kind of in the middle of nowhere, but surely there is a member near Atlanta that might be willing to help.

Lotsof things to check though: Are the valves set properly? Is there oil in the top of the pistons? Do all the plugs look equal in color or are there differences? Are the plug wires in good shape. Often what seems like carb may be ignition and vice versa.

Good luck, hopefully someone nearby can lend a hand!

Thanks Tom.
I have not checked the valves (guess that is next)but I did replace the
plugs
plug wires
points
condensor
rotor
cap
I did check the timing and I do have the 7.5 distributor advance correction.
It seems like after the idle is set with the unisyn, I cant adjust the front carb lean enough. I would like to start back at square one. is there a good "off the blocks"
approach.

Thanks,
Tim

Have you checked to see if you have the same jets in both carbs? It is not unheard of to have a .100 and a .090 (I think those are the sizes) jets on the same set of carbs. Also, are the needles matching needles?

When I had my 67.5 1600 a British car club guy rebuilt and tuned my carbs about with his eyes closed. You might have better luck finding someone versed in British cars

Thanks guys.

I do know that the carbs have two different floats in them so it is possible that it does not stop there. What an onion! I will also look for a british car mechanic. I see quite a few MGs around.

Just follow one of the MG's, within an hour or so, it will be at the mechanic's shop, or just follow the towtruck that picks it up.

Basics are get the timing right, valves adjusted and then do the carbs.
