Weak Brakes?

Okay, So I'm new to this roadster thing. I just bought a '68 2000. I'm just not too sure about the brakes. The car defineatly goes fast, but it don't stop so fast. Actually, the brakes do work, but it seems to me that I'm having to put a lot of pressure on that pedal. Sometimes a small bit of pumping can help, but they don't feel spongy otherwise. I'm used to driving a truck with power assist brakes, but it also weighs 2.5 tons, whereas my roadster is just pushing 1 ton. So I guess my question is whether or not this is normal? How hard do you press your pedal? And if it's not normal, where should I start?

Also, do any of you have any experience with adding a brake booster. I was thinking I could remote the battery in the trunk and use the extra space for a vacuum assist brake booster.

Thanks Joe

Hey Joe, welcome and happy roadstering.
The general brake info section on this site gives the starter info you need. When it says 'apppropriate rench', that means a properly sized (7/16" I think?) 'flare nut wrench'. It is available at Sears, and is an absolute must. (it grips the bleeder on all 6 surfaces. a reg wrench will strip it and removal then is painful)

Working on brakes sounds scary, but isn't. It is one of the most basic and easy beginner projects to do on your own, just be sure you have a level (i.e. non-downhill, there are some in Berkeley right? unless you live by Tilden!) road to test them on the first time. I installed the 'speedbleeders', and found them not very beneficial, and got so much air into my system during installlation they did less good than creating more work.

Roadster brakes should work excellent. They are same/similar to brakes for much larger cars (Jag E-type). Mine can stop from 40mph on what seems like 40 feet. Check (by pumping with hood open) that master cylinder isn't moving up and down. If it is the mounting position is cracked and needs a brace.
Good luck, Fergus in Huntington Beach, bleeding my brakes this weekend.....again.
