XXR 15x7 wheel pkg, here you go.

Post by 69shell »

On a different thread last week, someone was asking about the XXR wheels that are so prevalent on e-bay. I had bought the wheels a month or two ago when I saw what seemed like a better deal come along. Just got the tires mounted yesterday and installed them on the roadster last night.....here's the scoop for those who are interested.

The wheels are XXR 15x7, 15mm offset. The tires are 195-50-15. The car is a stock 69' and they seem to fit just fine. I didn't have the oppotunity to try fitting different sizes of tires so I took a stab at it and went with the 195-50. I don't think the 205 or 60's would fit without rolling fenders but I can't really prove that.
Not sure I love the 50's on the front as they look a little short but without going with a more narrow wheel I don't see an option.

As for the wheels, I'm happy with them. I had to make a very slight modification to account for the front hubs but that was trivial. I simply used a carbide bit in my router and it did a very nice job of taking off the inside edge so the wheels clear the hub lip.
As for cost, I'm into the entire package, wheels, tires, lugs for about $575.
Let me know if you have any questions or want more pics.

I am not a big fan of the Panasport style wheels, but these look good. Thanks for the update!

I can't tell from your pictures. . . did the center caps for the wheels fit over the front hubs?

no. I painted the grease cap and spindle the same gunmetal grey as the wheels and it looks pretty good. I might try to machine a cap that fits though, but not going to happen in the short term.

Those wheels look great. Thanks for the update. Let us know how they handle when you have had a chance to break them in.

Here are the only two pics that I have at the moment, let me know if you need more info. I've just been driving around town for the most part, but so far I like these.

There was no "before", the car hasn't been on the road in 20+ years. I bought it as a basket case, no motor, trans, etc. These are the first wheels/tires I've had on it.

thanks for all of the kind words. BTW, that's the original "spanish Red".
As for the ride of the 50 series...the best way I can describe it is that it rides like a sports car. It's a little stiff, a little grabby....all good as far as I'm concerned.

I stressed about what to put on this car as far as size, hope this helps someone. I've now got about 40 miles on the car, no rubbing of the wheels/tires. I had 2 local tire stores tell me to get lost when I was asking about sizes and availability so I'm happy to end up with something that worked. I'm particularly happy with the cost. (about $575 to my door)

Yeah, you caught me! I painted the roll bar the same color as the wheels.
