Valve train noise

ok here is the deal.. i have a work shop manual for car BUT when it comes to ajusting the vavle lash it says .017 (does not say Hot or Cold) what should it be ?
when i run the eng it starts off sounding quiet but after it warms up i swear i hear "Ticking" from the valve cover
ANY info would be great

My handed me down manual has .017 cold .021 warmed up written in the margin.

I may be wrong but dont they get tighter with heat ..so mabey its .o21 cold and .017 hot?
i will try this in the morning ..i bought it a new battrie this morning and hold down before heading to work ..btw i took the valve cover off this moring and check them cold and found one ext valve tighter than the rest (like .015 or so ) mabey that was the ticking i heard when it warmed up ...the resst of them was .017 on the dot ..
