I have a broken exhaust stud on my 1600 earlier head. Thanks to PO. The #1 exhaust stud...I know it can burn a valve..someday. I dont see any signs of exhaust leak, looks like a good metal type exhaust gasket. How prone to burning valves are these heads. Dont have the $$ right now to mess with, but rather spend little now than lots later. Thanks for your input.

If it's not leaking, you have nothing to worry about. May be able to to get it out with an easy out type extractor without removing anything. Just make sure you center the hole and use a top quality extractor. Last thing you want to do is break the easy out off in the stud!

I've had great luck with left hand drill bits. Hard to find, but half of the time it comes out while drilling.

You can use a RH drill bit to bore right through the broken stud and into the head cavity at the base of the stud.
Once you have a hollow stud you then dose it up with your favorite thread de-ruster and it will act on the bottom threads.
After some time the broken stud can be carefully unscrewed.
When re-installing new studs, use a thread anti seize like Copper Coat to prevent future problems

Also, if you have never tried them, screw extractors can break very easilly. If you're lucky, maybe it didn't break flush with the head and you can get a grab on it or weld on a nut.
But most important, It's not leaking, so it's just FINE where it is.

I like to weld on a nut. The heat tends to break the old threads loose. I then put an impact wrench on the nut and back it right out.

A common mistake with ez-outs is pounding them in so hard that they swell the threads you are trying to remove out into the sides of the hole, and then snap off. Tap the ez-out in just hard enough to do it's job.
