I think it is time to release my experiment findings. On another thread I had put out a request for peoples nasty twistys. Thanks so much to those that had responded.

Well here you go, the secret project will be revealed. I have side trim but no fasteners.....well one. But it was rusted beyond belief. So check this out. I had seen a thread where an enterprising young man had made his own. I chose a different route. Adapt an existing common part to a different purpose!

You take your nasty twisty, secure it in a small vice, and with a crap chisel, open that bad boy up.


Here is what you end up with. You starting to get the idea?


Look at that fit!!


Side trim fasteners recycled from junk parts!!! The fit is slightly looser than the stock fastener, but a hell of a lot less work than making them from scratch.

I should be working on my roadster, but nooooo. Just finished working on my Honda. What a shame and what a pain in the ass. It was cutting the spark randomly and died on the freeway twice on me.

I installed a new ignition control module or igniter. had to take out the whole intake system to make room to open up the dizzy. Wow! modern cars! the ICM and the coil are all inside the Dizzy. Well, it's done at least.

Very clever.
I saw a full set of side trim clips made from stainless on Ebay. Beautiful parts and for what it must take to make 'em pretty reasonable.
Not as reasonable as reclaiming old twisties tho.

Thanks Greydog! I got a lot of help from the generous folks here who sent me their old twisties. Shortly after I found out from Dean that he actually sells replacement side trim fasteners........I had no idea.

Today I actually did some work on my car for a change. I had sandblasted the headlight buckets a while back. Today I painted and reassembled them, cleaned up the wiring and connectors and put my headlights back in.

Not much, but it's got eyes now instead of empty sockets, and the car is on the re assembly process at least.

Today I hooked up all the front lights, and just for Sid, painted the area behind the grill black. I took apart my grill, cleaned everything up and painted the back part of the grill, and the grill itself. Yeah, bad chrome.

Put that all in, and started prepping the radiator and supports. Little by little we get there.

Here's the visual trick I did on my latest grille (a 1600), which had shabby chrome.
I noticed the chrome pitting was on the fwd surfaces of each bars due to weather, so I masked the top and bottom and painted the fwd face of each bar flat black.
Since the grille is always viewed at an angle (heck is it at knee height), it is not noticeable at all, kinda disappears visually.

Now if I could only do the same with portions of my waistline.

Man oh man. I just gotta say i'm a little bummed that I have made no forward progress on this car or thread.

Having been into roadsters since 79, and having owned 6 with at one time and having 3 running cars at once, its pathetic to not have this ONE up and going.

Sometimes life just keeps getting in the way.
