Well, whatever you do,........... DON'T WELD ANYTHING!

(sorry, I just HAD to say it) :P

I would still pull the 5th gear off and check everything out. I took the bearing off with a brass drift, working evenly around the inside collar. Not the correct tool but the parts store did not have a puller with long enough arms. It would suck to reassemble everything to find out it doesn't work and have to pull it again. Chances are it's ok if it easily went back together but...........

it went back together easily, I checked all gears, they all shift nicely, should I reinstall the whole drive train back in the car?

I refreshed my memory with the manual and 10-1 you are OK (no little springs and plates to center the slide?). but, IIRC there a lock washer missing or damaged from your assembly with tabs to bend over the nut.
I would still take it apart as its a lot of work to pull the trans.

I am with Mike on NOT Welding. Things done in the past when parts were cheap do not apply now that part are becoming rarer.

Mine did not have the lock tab either. No place on the output shaft for a tang to register anyways.

Maybe a silly question...What about red Loctite, the permanent stuff. As long as you are totally oil free, it should work. Also, that washer/locking tab will be a big help when trying to tighten the rear nut against the front. http://www.loctiteproducts.com/products ... 8&plid=154
Were it me, and the inner nut goes to a low torque and the outer to a very high torque, I'd torque the front nut, with loctite, wait til it cures, then do the outer nut with the locking tab washer between. Should have less chance of moving the inner as you tighten.

I like RED Loctite for things you don't want to come apart. LOL

You can get them apart with heat.

Green is also good

The fat angled washer next to the big nut has a notch in it where it lines up with a ball bearing on the output shaft. The washer should not turn with the thick nut loose. If it will the ball may have vanished.

If it were mine, I would take it completely apart and check (& clean) bearings, synchros, etc. Pretty much anyone comfortable enough to try can learn to do it but it takes time, patience, and organization.

Interesting sidebar - I reassembled a 5 speed and had three 5th gears to choose from. All had visible warpage of the dog teeth ring. The one with the least warpage went back into the tranny!

So question is, if Vihn took the tranny apart, step by step, could you get an idea of any damage, missing parts etc, and instruct him what to do, after he posts pics?
This is kind of like the control tower telling you how to land the plane after the pilot has a heart attack.....
OK I exaggerate a bit :)

IMHO,
Rebuilding a transmission is as much "ART" as "Mechanical". Because Vinh said his trans was shifting smoothly, I think its only necessary to repair the problem.

I would not "rebuild" a transmission without replacing all the bearings and second and third syncros. Then it would also be necessary to cure the reason it "needed" rebuilding.

just my 2 cents

and yes I think it could be done remotely by someone with "fair" mechanical skills.

Do you want me to find a 4-speed for you to rebuild Linda? LOL

Vihn,
Tighten up those locknuts good, or they might loosen up again. Looks like you were lucky this time, that doesn't appear to be any serious damage.

I agree with Phil. If there is no incriminating evidence (needle bearings in the oil, metal filings in the oil, obvious damage, poor shifting before), then fix the problem and go forth. To tear it down just to replace bearings may cause more harm than good - especially for the neophyte.
