I bought a '66 1600 in 2004 for my wife (she'd had one many, many years ago). After getting it off the shipper's trailer, I went for a drive with the guy who was going to store it temporarily for me. We hadn't gone two blocks before I was trying to think of a way to get another roadster for me.

I made serious points for buying the car for my wife. However, she had neglected to tell me she never wanted another one. Oops! The plus side? It became my roadster.

There's other stories I could tell, but the key thing is to at least get a ride in one (better to also drive) before finalizing your decision to keep or sell. Either way, get it running to motivate you or its next owner.

Good luck.

I just got my 69 Porsche, that I bought about five years ago, running a few days ago. While the Porsche is better in almost all ways, it can’t hold a candle to the open air driving experience of my Datsun. That’s why the Datsun will stay long after the Porsche moves on!

We have a '71 914 and 2008 Boxster RS60 so we don't have to deal with those 911 limitations.

As an update to part of my previous post, specifically the turn signals being hazards.

Today I took the steering wheel back off and I'm going to try to use some electric parts cleaner on the stalk assembly contacts...and I guess put it back together hoping I did something wrong last time...though nothing jumped out when I pulled it back apart. One thing I'm suspicious of is the flasher cans. There are 2 wired up, assuming one for signals, one for hazards (though currently there is no hazard switch). After a search on the board, it seems the stock cans should be mounted to chassis by a tab. The EZ harness cans have no tab, and are just zip tied up inside the dash. I'm not sure if it matters or not. I've seen other aftermarket harness kits have the cans mount into the fuse box, but this box doesn't have any allowance for such mounting.

Other than that, I bled the clutch line yesterday. Pedal feels MUCH better. I guess I didn't mention it in the previous post, but I'm guessing that was why pressing the pedal in didn't engage neutral when I started cranking the engine!

Kind of a stupid post, no real update here. But I just bought a shift knob and t-shirt from Datsun-Garage.com

I had signed up for their mailing list hoping for a sale or discount code of some sort, but never got one...so I just purchased at full price. Afterwards I got a link to share with friends...so, since I wished I'd have had one when I purchased, here's a referral link. Looks like it pops up in a window to the left to get a code through email.

When I went to test it, I also saw $5 off a $25 purchase code when signing up for the mailing list. Bummer...I never got that code.

If this isn't allowed, I can delete. Also, I have no affiliation with them, I have nothing to recommend them by, just sharing a link if anyone else is planning to buy from there!

Haha, yeah, I hadn't heard of them either...just happened upon it while searching for a Datsun t-shirt and liked theirs with the baseball style lettering rather than just a logo shirt.

I used PayPal, so hopefully if it's a dud site, I can get a refund. I'll update if/when I receive the order.

Got a tracking # from Datsun Garage today. I was starting to wonder, but their site did say expect delays due to COVID (like pretty much every website).

I cleaned the turn signal contact points and reconnected, but I still have hazards whether I turn it left or right. I have to imagine my flashers are wired up wrong. I don't remember looking over the PO's work on those too carefully. I do know there are 2 flasher cans wired, and there was dangling wiring that I put a piece of tape and labeled "Hazards" because as I recall it seemed that's what they were for (though the '67 didn't originally have hazards).

Guess I'll need to pull the dash back off.

I did find that I do have both brake lights working though. It helps to see them if I actually put the bulb into the taillight section, rather than hanging in the trunk (last time there was stuff piled on the trunk...and I could've sworn I had put everything in place way back when

High beams work.

I hooked my electric fuel pump up with the hose going in a gas can on both ends. It worked. So I'm getting the itch to hook it all up and see if it'll fire. Right now my choke cable doesn't seem usable though. I have it hooked up, except for the knob. It doesn't seem to want to go onto the cable...probably me just being stupid/ignorant.

EDIT: My order from Datsun Garage arrived. The shirt fits well. The shift knob looks and feels a bit cheaper than I had hoped, I'm not super impressed with it, but it may grow on me once installed. Either way, legit site, got me the stuff in pretty good time considering it came from CA, and there's a pandemic going on.

Today I pulled the dash back out, long story short, something with how the PO had the hazards wired in was causing the signals to only be hazards, and not turn signals. Since (from what I understand) the '67 didn't originally have hazards anyway, and I hadn't purchased a button to engage them I went ahead and removed the hazard wiring & flasher can. I also added a bracket to hold the flasher can for the signals.

There was a further issue with the right side indicator ground which apparently kept the indicator OR rear right signal to flash (before that only the front would blink on the right). I changed the ground location for the indicator and after that, turn signals work as they should. Then I put the dash most of the way back together.

I think that leaves all lights (other than maybe the map light, I haven't checked it yet) working properly. I still need to connect the wiring on the speedometer. It's hanging at the dash, and at the pulse generator, I haven't yet made the wiring for the in-between.

Hopefully someday soon I will try to start it.

Well...I was really trying to get into the spirit and be motivated this year.

Last weekend I wired up the speedometer and installed seat belts. All the lights are working, and I was thinking it might be about time to try to start it.

To keep my motivation rolling I bought some different wheels as well. I tried to confirm the size would work before buying, but maybe the seller's specifications were off...I dunno. They seem to be rubbing the brake lines. But hopefully nothing else. I don't know if I can get them to work or not. :(

The bigger problem is what I saw when I went to inspect the rubbing. Long story short, looks like there may be some suspension greasing issues? (or maybe just me being ignorant - see thread here). And also there's a nice puddle of brake fluid on the garage floor. And it's eating up all the POR-15 on the firewall. Guess that's why the master cylinder was low causing the brake lights not to work before. I'm assuming it's the master cylinder by the location anyway. Weird thing is it's hard to see much actual leakage, but it is eating the paint around the cylinder. Ugh.

Feeling a bit defeated today. Really didn't need multiple setbacks at once.

Well, I didn't accomplish much after that last post.

And now comes news that means I'll probably be moving in the near future. Unfortunately for me, I think this means this project will need to change hands.

I'll try to get a for sale thread started soon.
