I put some pics of this weekend's part of Scott's journey on the "where did you drive this weekend" post. I could not figure out how to put a link to that thread on this page.

I had a great stay with Tim, and it was really cool to get in an unexpected mini-rally with a bunch of other roadster guys as well, not to mention meeting John Morton as part of the deal. This trip just gets better and better.
Quick trip recap thus far:
Miles: 15,640 as of my last fuel stop (Yay! Past the 15K milestone!)
States/Provinces: NV, AZ, CA, OR, WA, BC, AB, ID, MT, UT, CO, NE, WY, SD, ND, MN, WI, IA, IL
Fuel consumed: 587 gallons
Next stops: Indiana, Ohio, Michigan, then back into Canada for a bit. Hoping to be travelling down the east coast for Fall.
Onward!

For those of you that I've met along the way and who were playing the "guess what's making that ugly noise in Scott's transmission" game, the correct answer was "front countershaft bearing". People who guessed correctly will be receiving their prizes shortly.
I pulled the motor and trans yesterday in Dayton, OH, broke the transmission open, swapped the bearing out for a new one (thanks, Dean!), put it all back together, and drove to Kalamazoo today with no issues. Nine hours total for the fix, which wasn't too bad for a not-in-my-own-garage motor pull. Hopefully it'll behave itself for the rest of the trip.
The culprit:

Ha! Great pic! Glad you got it sorted out Scott! RoadsterRoadTrip on!!!!!!!
I have to add this edit.....
I am glad you got this fixed and didn't have to do it here as I know damn well I don't have the tools to fix a tranny.

So who helped you out in Dayton?

I borrowed a friend's garage (he runs a maintenance squadron at Wright-Patterson AFB, so there were plenty of tools around), but I generally do most of the work so I don't forget anything. At home it's always just me, so I got pretty good at it.

We probably could have done it at your place if push came to shove--the only 'special' tool I needed was a little gear puller to get that bearing off of the shaft, but the rest was all normal stuff. (Well, you know, normal 'pull the engine out of the car' stuff; my niece's Hello Kitty toolkit probably wouldn't have cut it.

You need to look at the picture closer, there is grease all over the tyvek/disposable suit he's wearing.

I think you should turn this into a pictorial book. It would appeal to many who have a wanderlust and appreciation for old cars.

I think I managed to get most of the grease off of the car and on to a large portion of my wardrobe and garage floor before I left home; it's pretty clean in there now.
The Tyvek suit was a good call too; 8 bucks and it kept my clothes totally clean, which is good as I'm not carrying enough changes of clothing to be able to afford to sacrifice a set to the grease gods.
