Re: UPDATED writeup for my SR20 swap with A/C

thanks for the info, how a scale of 1-10 10 being the hardest how hard has this swap been?
That depends on a number of factors:

1) Your level of mechanical skill;
2) Your fabrication skills;
3) Your knowledge or roadsters;
4) Your knowledge of the SR20;
5) The size of your wallet (can you afford to pay someone to do some of the work)

In my case, I have pretty good mechanical skills, I had experience doing a frame off of a roadster and have pulled a number of roadster engine/tranny combos, and have been working on roadsters since 1986. My fabrication skill was poor to fair (I've learned a lot). My knowledge of the SR20 was zero. My budget was reasonable but not bare bones.

This has taken me 3 1/2 years and I would put it as a 6 out of 10. For someone like Kevin Desirello or Michael Spreadbury . . . it might be a 1 or 2. :D

Sorry for the delay in updating this thread. I spent the last six months traveling including spending two months in Ireland.

The most significant change-to-date is that the engine will NOT start. I have an older S13 SR20de and nobody seems to have the pinouts for my ECCS #60 (ECU) part number 23710-52F01. If I had to do it over again, I would go with an S14. I'm working with Wiring Specialites to figure this out.

I've continued to work on the car when I had time and have updated some things.

Due to my dual touchscreens, the center console interfered with the hand brake. I replaced the handbrake with an E-Stopp system that can be used as a parking brake or emergency brake. The actuator is installed just behind the passenger seat under the floor and is reinforced with 1/8" steel bar top and bottom. I connected the E-stopp to the original style e-brake bracket beautifully installed on my RX-7 differential built by John Wallum.

Operation is very simple. Push the button and it flashes and beeps until the brake is engaged. A strain gauge tells the system to stop when I reaches sufficient pull strength. To take the brake off, just push the button again. The operation takes about 10 seconds.

Alvin:

The system is very nice and can also be used as an emergency brake . . . bringing the car to a stop in about 10 seconds.

ISIS Update
I've continued to update the ISIS system on the car. I installed a radio card to operate keyfobs. The keyfobs allow me to turn off the security system in case the touchscreen fails (I have to type in a 6 digit code to unlock the screen). I've also added a push-to-start button from a Honda S2000 so that I can start the car without the touchscreen.
s2000 pts.JPG

I've also installed the inReserve system from ISIS which automatically shuts the power off to the car if the battery voltage drops too low and stays there for a period of time. This leaves enough power to start the car in case I accidentally leave something on or there is a drain on the battery. I've installed a momemtary switch to turn the power back on. This can also be used as a theft deterrent. Since I run a very small Braille battery, I used a very large conductor to the starter. This is installed under the car behind the package shelf on the driver's side.

I installed LED headlights and I absolutely love them.

Air Conditioning Update

For those of you who didn't see the car at Solvang . . . I've installed the A/C vents in the dash.

ac vents.jpg

I've almost finished the wiring for the A/C. Once I get it hooked up, ISIS will allow me to control the mix (floor, vent, defrost) and temperature through the screen.

BTW, I'm switching the ammeter out and replacing it with a volt meter.

Shannon, what do the lights look like on? Any daytime shots with the lights off? I'n curious if they still have the "vintage" look...not that your build theme is vintage :mrgreen:

Yeah I drooled over the A/C system and dash vents....very seamless install

Alvin:

Unfortunately I don't have any pics with the lights on. . . yet. They certainly don't look stock. The headlights only turn on the top half of the fixture. When the brights are on, the light fills the entire circle. Unusual but the pattern is quite good.

Shannon,

I am surprised to hear you are having problems finding info on an S13 SR20DE-- if you PM me your e-mail address, I can send you a pin-out for the ECU.

Wiring on this ECU is very easy-- if you want to run by the connections you have made, I can give them a quick review.

Michael:

I sent you a PM. The problem I'm having is no spark. I have an external coil which is not very common. The pinout I do have is for a 1991-1993 Nissan Silvia SR20DET which is close but not exact since my ECU is for a 1992-1994 SR20DE. Most of the locations on the DET pinout are the same but I don't see any pinouts for the coil.

Neze:

I saw this diagram a year or so again. Thanks for reminding me. My distributer looks like the one on the right labeled "Late DET dist" with the four inline pins. I also have a KA24 distributor like the one shown on the left with the internal coil (came with the engine).

I talked to Yury at wiring specialties. He recommends replacing my distributor with one from an S13 or S14 with an internal coil. I've only been able to find these in Australia and New Zealand and, so far, can't get anybody interested in shipping to the States but still working on it.

Does anyone here have a source to get one?

Shannon,

I think upgrading to a S14 SR20DE distributor is a really good idea-- I did the same thing on my wife's S13 swap (documented in that build thread).

I can contact my guys in Japan and we can see if we can get one for you.
