Will,

Have you tried running the jumper wire ?

The ignition coil should have two wires coming off the positive terminal, one wire goes to the ballast resistor, and the other wire from the starter solenoid. You bypass the ballast when in the start position because you have ~ 9- 10 volts to the coil when cranking, due to the starter draw, so the ballast is not needed.

If you have the car running in the crank( start) position, then you are on the bypass wire. Sounds like you may have a problem in the wiring or ballast / ignition switch when in the run position.

I called a priest, and had it exorcised. It drove home...... We shall see, now I don't have any brake or turn signal lights, but I'm fairly sure I unplugged something under the dash.

The electron demon has been banished. The car runs, and I did unplug the brake lights and turnsignals under the dash. I drove the car around yesterday afternoon and it didn't die, and all day today. I was even compelled to scrub the greasy fingerprints off and clean it up some.

This engine is mean, I got the carbs tuned fairly close, I have a steady idle at about 550 rpm, and it pulls like a beast. I can't wait to see what it has above 4000 rpm.

I don't know what the issue was. I think it was a combination of my coil, balast restor and a couple of questionable connections that were causing it to misbehave. Beyond that, perhaps the stars were incorrectlly aligned, a curse wore off, I have no idea. The MSD was not the problem and with it back on, it runs fine. I had a stable idle of 250rpm this afternoon. I actually got bold enough to leave town and run up the coast. It ran great, feels a little tighter now than this morning, I think I might be able to run a little more than 20 degrees static on pump gas. It didn't ping pulling up a pretty good hill in 5th. I'm going to do some more tuning tomorrow.
