Got that, but what is the best method for getting them in...I don't want to damage the bearing at all.

Recommend getting or borrowing a camshaft bearing install tool...

You can have a machinist install for you. They have the expertise and tools. I was told it is a bit tricky for an amateur. I watched it done and was glad to have the guy do the install.

Thanks guys, I am bringing the motor to JMS Racing Engines in el Monte CA later today. They did the rest of the machine work on the motor and it came out amazing. I am trying to do everything I can myself on this restoration, but I realize there are some things I just better not attempt without the proper tools. Thanks again.

Getting ready to install tail section on a four speed.

Manual says there should be a box for the end of the tip of the striker rod to fit into.
So here is what it looks like, seems it must be correct, thought I'd check here though.

Prior to the final bolt down.

Hi all,

Looking to dive into the roadster world with a '66 1600. The owner says it is non-running as he put a new distributor on it and it needs the points set and have the timing set as well.

Is this something a beginner could do? I do the basics, oil/brakes/plug and play fixes, but have never messed with an engine mechanically before.

I may just put a pertronix on it. Engine bay pics already show a pertronix coil. (is that bad to have a higher power coil with the old point ignition system?)

Not hard to sort but you need to know a few basics.
Have you got access to the relevant Manual for the car?
If not, I'm sure we can talk you through it on this forum.

I pulled the service manual and owner's manual off the wiki. I understand the theory of a distributor and ignition timing but some of the language in the manual and the practical actually doing it is a little oblique to me.

The essential issue is phasing the distributor correctly in relation to the engine cam shaft.
The engine crank needs to be at Top Dead Centre [TDC] on the COMPRESSION stroke of cylinder #1.
Then the distributor can be manually inserted into the engine and when it engages the drive gear it will rotate slightly and be correctly aligned.
It can of course be inserted 180deg out which although incorrect, can be compensated for.
Anyhoo, Once you get everything in front of you we can do some checking.

I fitted one of these to my '65 SP310 and it runs beautifully, absolutely well worth the $$$$$

I have a Msd and a EI distributor.
Does anyone have a snapshot of the coil area of the wires
Without the ballast in place? I want to see how the wires are connected.
