bearing is a press fit on the sleeve

Do you have the replacement bearing? It usually comes as ready to install with collar. I have not tried replacing just the bearing before it is press fit as JT points out.

The Throw out bearing should slide right off the housing. The throw out lever just pops onto the bearing, spring loaded, no physical attachment like a screw or anything. The lever is also spring loaded onto the pivot point, pull straight out sharply at the pivot point to remove lever from bell housing.
Remove lever, slide bearing off collar, slide new bearing in place, re-attach throw out lever.
I have the collar + bearing out of the bell housing but can't separate bearing from the collar (by hand, anyway)
I did mine just 2-3 months ago, I don't remember it taking any more effort than others that I have done so it couldn't have taken more than a tap.

The sleeve (bearing carrier)comes off easily from the trans, but the bearing itself is definitely a press-fit on the sleeve-at least it should be. Many bearings do not come on a sleeve. if you post a photo we can tell you what you have.

A couple pics of the current one...seems like it would have to be pressed on, since otherwise it would probably rotate.

This looks like the old one, which doesn't help. If it is indeed the new one than you are ready to go, other than the fact that the inside looks a little rusty.

Yes, images above are the old collar+bearing. I'm assuming the bearing is removable so that I can press a replacement onto the collar. Or is that not possible?

It desn't matter much how you remove the old thrust bearing since it is junk.
By that I mean the pressure can be applied to the outer race to remove it.
However, when you press on the new one, ONLY press on the INNER race

So I'm looking for suggestions on how to remove the old bearing without damaging the collar (in particular the machined sleeve). Is there an extraction tool meant for this? Or is the preferable route to always mount a new bearing on a new sleeve?

I place the whole assembly across the open jaws of a vice on the outer race.
Then using a socket or tube of the right diameter, hammer down on the bearing carrier tube.
A bit of WD-40 and a BFH and it will start moving.

Different colors are used to ID the different rates of the springs.

How do I find out what yellow means. Supposedly the PO had put comps on it and was trying to verify that they were. I'd like to drop the front about 1 to 1 1/2"

yes, that one has to be pressed on the cast sleeve after pressing off the old one. a small hydraulic press is the way to go so that you don't damage anything. The new bearing face can be damaged fairly easily if forced on incorrectly. about 10minutes at almost any machine shop.
Suggest using the correct tools.....you will be very unhappy if you ruin the new bearing or the sleeve.
