Do you have the replacement bearing? It usually comes as ready to install with collar. I have not tried replacing just the bearing before it is press fit as JT points out.

The sleeve (bearing carrier)comes off easily from the trans, but the bearing itself is definitely a press-fit on the sleeve-at least it should be. Many bearings do not come on a sleeve. if you post a photo we can tell you what you have.

This looks like the old one, which doesn't help. If it is indeed the new one than you are ready to go, other than the fact that the inside looks a little rusty.

Yes, images above are the old collar+bearing. I'm assuming the bearing is removable so that I can press a replacement onto the collar. It desn't matter much how you remove the old thrust bearing since it is junk.
By that I mean the pressure can be applied to the outer race to remove it.
However, when you press on the new one, ONLY press on the INNER race

So I'm looking for suggestions on how to remove the old bearing without damaging the collar (in particular the machined sleeve). Is there an extraction tool meant for this? Or is the preferable route to always mount a new bearing on a new sleeve?

I place the whole assembly across the open jaws of a vice on the outer race.
Then using a socket or tube of the right diameter, hammer down on the bearing carrier tube.
A bit of WD-40 and a BFH and it will start moving.

How do I find out what yellow means. Supposedly the PO had put comps on it and was trying to verify that they were. I'd like to drop the front about 1 to 1 1/2"

yes, that one has to be pressed on the cast sleeve after pressing off the old one. a small hydraulic press is the way to go so that you don't damage anything. The new bearing face can be damaged fairly easily if forced on incorrectly. about 10minutes at almost any machine shop.
Suggest using the correct tools.....you will be very unhappy if you ruin the new bearing or the sleeve.
