In the mean while, I will gather all the parts and pieces, where can I find a second nut for this (double nut), does anyone out there have one for sale, or better yet can anyone locally here at Los Angeles, Orange, Riverside CA can help me with welding? I will bring you the tranny, I don’t know how to weld nor have a welding machine.

Vihn,
So when you pull the tranny, like you said, just open it up and start taking pics. Someone here may be able to see the "roll pin" or whatever, perhaps. Then make recommendations based on that.
Too bad there isn't a "web cam" option, then you could show the part in real time.
Be sure to come back to this thread to post.

Vinh,
I would wait until you get it apart.
The only thing you could buy is the locking plate (I wouldn't buy one, but it's a good idea). As far as the second nut, you might have two or you might have a stacked nut.

If you can't find someone local to help, you can always bring it to San Diego LOL.
or I would bet Les would to let us meet at his shop in Vista (about half way).

You get it apart and lets go from there....

I should have a used OEM 5spd roadster box running around here somewhere. I pulled a fully functional factory 5 spd out of my roadtser when I installed my ultra close gearbox.

PM me if you are interested.

Hey all,
I finally have the time to remove the motor and tran, Please look at the pictures and see if I damage anything’s but so far I have not see any broken or small metals when rear cover was removed. Again I need all you guys input on this.
Please study the pictures and let me know on what I should do next.
If you all need more pictures please just ask.

Vin,
You have a splined 5th gear. It looks like the nuts have "backed off" and the spline gear has come apart.

If you look at mikes last picture and your picture you can see where the gear came apart and that the nuts are closer to the bearing....backed off.

There are some little plates and springs inside the "slider" (part that moves with the shift fork) that center the slider. Chances they might have come loose.

See if you can slip the "cone" back onto the gear and slide the mess forward.

I don't think you will be able to slide the gear forward because of the little plates.

In that case you will need to remove the drive for the speedo...it has a ball bearing that you need not to loose. Than remove the bearing on the main shaft.

You are going to need to remove the fifth gear on the counter shaft....remove the bearing than the gear.
Now you will be able to remove the fifth gear on the main shaft.

I have never seen the splined gear come apart.

Might need to have it "pressed" back together.

Lets look to see what the group has to say.

Hey Phil
OK now I do see the difference between mine and Mikes.
So you saying I can’t slide the splinted gear back by tighten the nuts? Should I give it a try to see if work and so you see any other things broken?

Thanks

I can hand turn those two nuts but few turns only, I use a ranch and abe to turn two more full turn and felt it tighten but the splined gear is still backed off, should I continue?

I agree, pull the gear off. There are syncro parts in there that may have shifted. These are the ones I am speaking of. They ride on 5th gear. It also looks like the nuts may have backed off due to torque by cold chisel. When you reassemble, get a 1 1/2" crowsfoot to properly torque the nut to around 220 ft/lbs. Don't forget to backup the front nut while doing this as the manual I have says the front nut only gets torqued to 15-20 ft/lbs.

DO NOT TRY TO Assenble by tighting the nuts or you will be buying parts.

You should be able to assemble the parts by hand.

Look at and read the reassembling section of the transmission manual.

It not a big deal to remove the counter shaft bearing and gear. You may need a puller, here in San Diego, Kragen Auto Parts has them you can borrow for a deposit.
