The problem is that after the towers have been removed from the head they may not go back in perfect alignment even if put back in their original spots. That’s where the tweaking comes in play. Of course it’s better if they go back in the proper place, but it’s not a guarantee of perfect alignment.

Thanks. Will report back when I get a chance to mess with the alignment.

You can remove the towers and then correct the order, it requires the use of a straight edge to verify alignment. I have personally done it a few times over the years and also put towers on from other cylinder heads. So correcting the order should not be too difficult.

If you are looking for a bit more full service, I'd suggest reaching out to Bill Harvey. He is an expert on the Datsun Roadster and has a shop in Lakeland, Florida.

Cool that might be an option if I get stuck. Good to know about shops for these motors.

Bill Harvey is a great guy and has forgotten more about roadsters than most people know.

mschel,
Where in Md are you? I am in DC and am now getting the engine machined (making sure that I preserve the engine number on the head surface) to fit parts that I have been accumulating to get the short block done. Being that the whole machining and assy adds up, I am having the shop do all the required machining and I will rebuild the block myself (saves over a grand). The shop I go to did the same thing for my 289 HIPO that I put together. Parts much much easier to find but some just as pricy as the U20. Rockville Ring and Bearing Service. They are still working on the block, but expect in the next few weeks.

Thanks for the recommendation, Rockville is not too far from here. Been stalled on the project for a bit now.
