The guys at Moment seem to have it going on! if they have an adapter for an L-series transmission, they are well on the way with a tonne of different Datsuns... That would be a great solution for my 510... Do you know if they sell their hardware? or do they only do their own work? I would be interested in following up with you as your project progresses... I have a couple extra roadsters... one of which should be electric...

I might be able to get some hardware from them, but they usually only do their own work. (Otherwise I can get from EV west who could also make the adapter if I sent them the transmission) Moment could engineer an adapter for my transmission ( I guess it is an L series). I think he was thinking that it would be cheaper to change transmissions if it would fit. Maybe if we had enough interest in the adapter we could defer some of cost.

Once the engine is out, I could get the car scanned and engineer motor mounts. I also need to figure out if their battery packs will work or those need to be crafted too. Otherwise it’s just a bunch of electric work.

Have you seen KIA's new all electric car looks like a Tesla so much.

Redskull, can you share more about your VW conversion? It sounds like you would basically try to incorporate a similar setup with the Datsun. How much kW, torque, and range do you suppose you’ll be able to get? What’s the weight difference? I’m still trying to learn but it looks like motors supplied by ev west arent high voltage? It’s great someone on here has some ev conversion experience!

I was thinking of using 5x Tesla S battery packs: Each 22.8v, 5.3 Kwh, 55 lbs. to go with a Netgain Hyper 9 motor X1 (120V). It has 173 Ft lbs of torque and makes 120Hp. I have pulled over 600amps when I punch it. Hoping to get 3 batteries up front, 55x3 = 165 + 120lbs for the motor, That would be 285 lbs up front and I have heard the old motor is 340 lbs, so maybe break even with other gear up front. Back would be 2x55 = 110 lbs. Full tank would be 11.3 gal x 6 lbs = 68 lbs, so maybe 40 extra Lbs in the back. This this would get it closer to 50/50. With this config I think my range is 80-100 miles but Have never fully tested the range (Total 26.5 Kwh) (about 1/3 of a Tesla)

In my bug I had 2 of the Batteries up front where fuel tank was, and 3 behind the back seat. Still use the original transmission / trans-axle so I have 4 gears. Can drive around in 3rd gear which is fun.(No shifting needed) 2nd gear gives you a fun start (I leave most cars behind at a light) and 4th gear for highway cruising (I have taken it up over 75 mph)

So I would gain over 20% HP And 70% more torque (but quicker and at lower RPMs) . ( I don't think my engine has 96 HP anymore now)
Looking at $20K for all the parts, so not cheap....

Which insurance company do you use for such a thing ?
And is it $$$$ to insure ?

A man was killed here in K C a night ago driving on I-70 when his Tesla just lost all power him in the center lane ,guess he was so shocked he forgot to get it off the road and cars slammed into him... kmbc 9 news had it

I suspect a bigger percentage of ICE powered vehicles suddenly loose power than EV’s do. I look for EV’s to be more reliable than ICE’s mainly do to having significantly less moving parts. Now autonomous vehicles, that scares me!

I hope they determine what went out .... it lost all electric power like no battery, that's not likely on A FUEL eng. Because the alternator makes elect , power looks like a seperate batt, is needed for lighting on EVs or ban them from interstates hwys ... I know we'll put a small gas eng. to take over when the electric motor quits , we'll call it, a hybrid.
It can be dangerous task to get to the shoulder with the drivers here doing 75-80 .

a stop
There isn't a free wheel with a EV I believe because you use the engine to power the batt. on decell.

@Redskull - I would be curious to look at transmission options. L series transmissions are pretty widely sought after - unless you opted to go with a 4 speed - they are cheap and accessible. But, given the swap to electric, I wonder if you couldn't just find another transmission that EV west already has a plate for that could be readily strapped into the roadster tunnel... Find something that is cheap and relatively available... maybe a miata 5speed? I don't know about dimensions... but I bet they have a plate for it...

I had classic car insurance on my ‘72 Beetle from State Farm. After the EV conversion I sent all my receipts and new pictures. They still covered it and the rates went up some as the value of the car went way up.

I do have a 4 speed transmission on my 1970 1600. I will look into other transmission that might have a plate. EV Canada had some Nissan plates but waiting for their sight to update. I have not seen EV West convert Japanese cars yet. Mostly VW and Porsche
