About 30 years ago I bought a Volvo 1800ES from a guy going through a divorce. He had the car; she had all the household papers. including the car's title and the deed to the house.
The state of Alabama, at that time, would accept a Bill of Sale and no other paperwork to issue a title to a car past a certain year. I obtained the title for the fee, and took the title to the DMV in my state, paid the sales tax, titled & tagged the car.
