Hi Garth,

I think the reason for the rapid increase in engine numbers is the fact that you need spares, right hand drive engines are coming from the same group. Also based on the engine numbers I don't think there was ever a 67 left hand drive car built over number 850 and 600 for the right hand drive as they would have been delivered without engines.

Dave,

I guess we have to review plausible Nissan accounting practices in more detail this summer at Shasta!

As far as I know all Aussie 150 hp cars came with the non smog head ( mine has been replaced with a smog head due to moulding issue with the original ...)

The vin and engine number was stamped on the Id plate on the firewall - with my early 68 car being
U20 1788 in car 7084.
68 Datsun 2000 solex carbs matching number ... Now with long pipes
67.5 number 662

Dave.
Would love to see the SRL-00852 vin tag . Wonder if its a type error.Does anyone know this car.
I find it really had to believe there are no cars listed from 700-852 ??

The early U20 engines were used as "mules" in other cars. They ran them for a while to get the bugs out - then started using them in SRL cars. That's why they don't start at #1

Arnold, I agree. I'd love to see some more info regarding 852 as well. Years ago I think I read in a rallye catalog something about Japanese cars being scrapped when they were just several years old (taxes or registration or safety standards maybe?). I think the guess was the last 300 went to japan and were crushed after a short life -- or my mind is playing tricks on me. I read it somewhere long ago. Additionally, my engine (826) showed up last week. I bought it from a guy in wa state several years ago and finally had it shipped to nc. He pulled it out of a car in a salvage yard -- no idea if it was a true 67.5 car or a later car with a transplant (although the junkyard tag indicates it was a 67 roadster 2000).

If the yard was near Woodenville I may have seen that engine 26 yrs or so ago, around 1987. It was from a '67 2000 that was in the yard, engine and trans pulled. They were keeping it in the main shop. I was not able to save the car at the time, being a college student. I later called and found the car had been crushed. I didn't ask about the engine.

P.S. If 963 is the car number (on the tag) it seems very likely, as I recall thinking it was darn near the last of the '67 2000s.

Your engine (826) should be out of a 67.5 in the 400-500 range.
Need to add my other cars to the Registry.SRL00057,SRL00429,SRL00457
Car SRL00429 has the closes engine to yours U20 #788

Cool story Greg, thanks. Although, if I remember correctly the guy I bought it from stated he pulled it out of the car and was probably in his late 20's (I may have to send him an email to confirm the origin of the engine)? 963 is listed on the tag as an internal #. Do yards use vins or partial vins as their internal numbers?

I read somewhere that there were a number of 66 2000 (test cars maybe?) before the launch in march of 67 of the 2000. That does not account for more than a 100 blocks. What are the lowest numbered R and G blocks?
