Ha! When I first got my car, I got caught by my friends doing that exact thing! I was really embarrassed at the time, but it was setting the vision and preparing me for the day after day battle to do something much much bigger than I had ever tried to tackle. I drove it to grad school in California a year later after a frame off rebuild, with 80 miles on the first engine I had ever built (let alone a totally disassembled car!).

Without vision, the people (or car) perish! It was life changing...

Gregs672000 wrote:Epic! Loved the pic with you in the drivers seat. Gotta have that vision very clear in your head throughout a process like this or it never gets done! If that's a Border collie he/she can probably help you chase down parts (or herd the parts into a bin!)

Is car restoration something you all do for a living, or is this one of those long European vacation times I hear about vs the "nose to the grinding stone" schedules us Americans tend to keep (with productivity statistics showing we're no more efficient or effective, but less happy in general... I am a social scientist who is somewhat interested in that kind of stuff)?
The dog is a `Friese stabij` "he" is usually sleeping on the selfinflating mat which I use to lay on /put my knees on when working on the body. He doesn't mind loud noices and likes cotten rags with oil, the dirtyer the better. He is a good guard.

About "the nose to the grinding stone"...lots of companies here attend to have the same policy of American companies, which doesn't work for the employee to have a happier and better lifestyle.

About the social/psychic science:
We are not an average Dutch family in an average house with an average familycar, 2 times vacation a year, new flatscreen and other hightech stuff to showoff the neighbours our status.
We are not earning an average income (we are beyond), when we had both a fulltime job.
My husband (Henk) and I differ 18 years, speaking of 18 years that's the age of my youngest stephson who is still living with us since the divorce of Henk with his ex-wife. Henk and I are 13 years together, 5 years married.
Together we have 8 cars (mostly Datsun, youngest car is from '87 and is our daily driver) and 2 motorbikes.
I lost my job over a year ago because of reorganisation, I am workless since.
That gives you time to work on a nice project, and the irritation energy of not getting a job (because of the economic crisis me and 800.000 others and all those workless ZZP'ers (One man company without personel) lost their jobs) will be put in my fairlady which receives it gladly. At the otherside money can be spend once so when the fairlady project is done I go back to saving because my social income is not forever and than we need all the money to survive. But hopefully the sun is shining at the brightside for us. Exspecially in june when we go to Norway, hopefully with our Roadster.
So not having a job is convenient to do a restorationproject, it is good against embitterness, keeps you healthy, keeps your mind busy with good things instead of with the darkerside of life / worries. A carhobby makes new friends, use eachother abilitys and share the passion for our cars. "One hand washes another".
And don't forget; Life is a Zig-Zag road, not only because evilspirit's only travel in straight lines, but also because Zig-Zag roads are best to drive in an Datsun Fairlady Roadster, a Z, ZX or other car which becomes your "buddy" during your lifetime.

Ofcourse I made Vrooom vrooom sounds to make the picture more alive :)

made some pads for the frame. Not sure I am gonna use these black ones or a grey type. I putted from both a left over in water to see after 24hours which one absorbs, or not. (Both did not absorb but I used the grey ones (sprayed them black). They are used in the smoke exhaust business for houses and buildings)

removed inlet manifold for sanding and also valve cover, The inlet manifold had a lump on one of thepipes, which we removed

Your positive attitude and useful expression of your frustration energy will do you well! Cars can be both therapy, or lead one to needing therapy! Best wishes to you on all fronts, good things are coming!

valve cover and intake manifold, glaspearl sanded, ready for a color.

fueltank is leaking on the new welded on bulb, removed all zincspray to put on epoxy primer (after welding job)

it's getting colder in the garage 2C degrees...so on with the dash in the livingroom

needed a blue, orange and red lens for my dashboard. You can use the backsite of a drill 9.5mm to tap out the lens with -> (arrow) which locks the lens. After that put in the lens you want to use, a 3/16 washer and than the arrow lock thing, you got a nice round sign, without to ruin the original arrow thingy. For the colored lenses I took a saw and a colored signallamp.

we got first time snow...brrrrr

the fueltank is back to our friend the tig welder. Because it was leaking, we decided to let him redo the lump at the underside (molested cat drinking nap), he is gonna make a new lumb from stainless steel and weld this to the tank. I think that will be better for durability. It is gonna be +/-140mm wide by 45mm high.

Henk made the shiftlever from the original one in to the S15 one. Strange enough the gearlever has M10 fine (1.25) thread. Henk cut of the old lever about one inch above the ball, drilled with a 8,5mm drill in the old lever and than cut the thread in it.

Also he finished the heatshield above the exhaust muffler. (in the X-frame). Between muffler and shield is some heat insolating material. The clamps do the rest.

Image

I ordered a new fuelfilter for a 300ZX Z31 which fits perfectly in the fuelfilterclamp of a 300ZX ( ) when the fueltank and all is in place we can see where we place the filter, best is close after the fueltank. to prevend clogged fuellines.

Image

tuesday I probably have time for more wiring on the dashboard, because I run out of wires (1,5mm2) :smt016

the painter welded the earlier replaced leftrear fender.

been to the paintshop. Most of the straightning metal work is done.
ready for a primer layer and than aluspritz (that has to dry a few days and that layer goes mostly off by sanding (blocking..?)) After that again a primer layer and than maybe next week some paint...
good things come slowly...

NICE.
Erica you must be excited!!
If I had it to do over again, I would seam seal the rear 1/4. Moisture and dirt trapped under the side trim will transmigrate into the seam and cause rust. Dont fill the entire seam, just a small amount, on the overlapping metal.

the big holes in the doorsills will be covered by the aluminum door sill plates (any one a good idea to polish those things) and are made to put in as much as body protection, for hollow areas, as possible.

Did someone tryed to dent out the U shaped bodytrims? Mine need some work...
