Way to go Ted. I have the same tire (well different size 185/55/14 Yoko S.drives) and they are sticky! Unfortunately, mine are 14's and as such
put me a wee to close the mother earth .

Well I managed a few things the last couple of days.
Added an antenna grommet, new hood bumpers along the fender (wrenched lower back doing this doh!), added jack
grommet (holds jack in trunk) and rubber around the jack stand.

Installed my heat shield and carburetors yesterday and started them today. Want to tune them and report,
waiting on my back to heal

Yesterday I went to work at repairing the rear panel. Removal of the paint a few months ago revealed a thick application of filler, and that on both sides of the license plate recess, someone had ground completely through the metal, The metal had been ground through also just behind the drivers door, and on the hood in two places! Lots of extra work. The rear panel had been bent enough, apparently in a collision, that I needed to go to my parts car to see what the proper shape really is. Well it was bent so far that it would oil-can an inch back and forth so I needed to shrink on both sides with my O/A torch and quenching. Here are pics of the gouge through the panel, and the start of the repair.

Used an REI foam sleeping pad for some cushion in the trunk. I have a bunch of junk in the trunk and worry about denting the rear fenders from the inside.

Very smart idea that! I've done some similar measures to protect things.

Couldn't get the video of the new carbs to work, but I am looking forward to hearing how it all comes out!!! Excited!

Looking good Ted! The S-drives are a great compromise and I enjoyed them. Now, when will we see a burnout?

well I got it back into my heated shop a few days ago. I was working on smoothing up the right rear quarter, when I noticed the seventh place that I have now found where someone had ground right through the sheet metal while prepping for paint. I can't imagine a do-it-your-selfer doing this more than once, so I figure it had to be a pro doing a quick and dirty job. clean the paint off FAST then slap the filler on and shoot paint. Here is a pic of what I cut out. The hole was much smaller but I had to probe it and cut out all that was ground thin. The second pic is with patch welded in. You can see at the top and bottom where I had to chase thin metal further than what I cut out.

Since my last post on this subject (page 132), I've been chipping away at all the little jobs that I want to do before I'm back on the road.

I noticed that the crankshaft gear's teeth were looking more like Christmas trees than they should, so I replaced both gears, the chain, and the tensioner. The timing cover got a new seal and gasket, too.
(I just noticed I took this picture before the tensioner was added. I swear I didn't forget that! )

Then it was on to the clutch - new plate, cover, throwout bearing, and pilot bearing. The kit came with new dowels for the flywheel and a clutch arm boot, so those got replaced, as well. (No good photos, though.) I noticed that the pilot bearing that came out of the car actually had some rollers on the inner diameter, but that the replacement was simply smooth/flat. Hopefully, this is ok...? (I probably should have asked before moving on to the next step.) For the record, did some Datsuns come with rollers and others without?

New transmission ((Thanks again, Linda!) got mounted to the block... ... and is back in the car - at least it's physically back in the car. No hoses or wires are attached, yet, but I hope to get to that soon.

I noticed that the bolts for the transmission mount on my previous trans threaded right into the housing, while the new trans has no such threaded part. It's a bolt-through, lock washer & nut situation. At least that's how I did it.

Apart from the manuals there are many tips found in the archives for each job you are doing, so be sure to consult the brain trust.
There are some options for a new tranny mount if yours is looking worn. I have one if interested.
Might want to check ujoints too since you are reinstalling.
It will be worth it when it is back on the road!

Nothing beats a new timing chain kit. That was my favorite part to install when I rebuilt my R16.

Roller bearing for the pilot is an upgrade or "racing accessory" Nice to have, but not required.

Got a new exhaust system!

Finished the aluminum radiator installation, just need a couple of fasteners. Was able to drive around a bit, no leaks and nice and cool. Linda
