Scott,
I have been sharing your trip with my buddy Carl1 since your visit in NJ. He is the second half of our build on my car. Anyway, as soon as you hit Florida he said how cool it would be for you to hit all 48. That is, on top of the already incredable journey you have been on. We ( Carl1 and his wife, and my bride Kathy and I) hope to see you again when we make it to Shasta.
I think I can, I think I can.

Bridgestone Blizzaks. They are the best snow/ice tire out there on a rear wheel drive car. You can always ebay them after... Heck, find someone with a set of steelies and go old school with the blizzaks on the steelies, ship the other rims home...
If you brought them back this way, I might take them off your hands... Could come in handy...

Scott you've already decided so all I can do is pat you on the back and say
OF COURSE you should.
It gives you a few more options for headlines in feature print story coverage and the eventual book ...
And, as with your NC experience, you don't know until you've been there what you will see in this remaining handful of states.
By the way, I spent about an hour this afternoon scrolling through the satellite close-up imagery along an Arkansas highway where I saw this beast. It's on the south side of Magnolia Hwy between Magnolia and El Dorado.
I saw it going west and we turned around to go see. I was thinking it would be easy to spot from the air if it were still there, but alas, I could not locate it for you in case you wanted to pay respects ...
That was a real purty part of Arkansas to drive through. We turned left onto a couple of back roads south - southeast of El Dorado across the state line into Louisiana. There's a great crawfish place right at the state line, but I'd have to dig up my old expense report to find it.

Five degrees out this morning in Atlanta. Car fired right up and idled fine. So much for "stay south to stay warm", but I'm pretty amazed that it's not fazed at all by the weather. Mathematically, this means the car has seen a 120 degree swing in temperature over the course of the trip from the heatwave in California to the cold snap that's here now.

We should lobby Letterman... Actually maybe better suited to Jon Stewart or Jimmy Fallon...

Dammit. In retrospect I guess Leno is the obvious choice... Perhaps Linda could put a word in...

What a great article, fantastic pictures, just all around super duper! You really nailed it when you called the car an optimist! That's exactly how I feel about my car, and the feeling I get when I drive it. I think many others share that feeling as well.
