We are one week away!

Coronado Speed Festival 2008

Posted By Sports Car Digest On August 15, 2008 @ 8:30 am In Vintage Racing

Set against the stunning backdrop of San Diego Bay, the 2008 Coronado Speed Festival, held September 27-28, will feature 225 of the world’s most unique and pedigreed machines at one of the most distinctive stages, Naval Air Station North Island, the birthplace of Naval Aviation. A spectator-friendly 1.7 mile course is constructed in a matter of days on the runways and taxiways of Naval Air Station North Island.

The vintage racecars are chosen to compete on the basis of their historical significance and certified authenticity. Some of the cars on the track are valued in the millions of dollars and, unlike most racing events, fans are invited to tour the pits and speak with the drivers of these unique machines.

An enthusiastic gathering of 20,000 fans is expected to be on hand to take a step back in time to enjoy auto racing’s rich history. The 11th annual Coronado Speed Festival is hosted by the Navy Region Southwest and the Morale, Welfare and Recreation Program. MWR retains revenue generated by tickets sold to the Military and a percentage of the overall revenue generated by the event. They in turn provide positive support for the active duty military community and their families through Quality of Life Programs including single Sailor Recreation Centers, Fitness and Aquatic Facilities and the Base Theatre Free Movies. Active duty military and their dependants attend for free with Military ID. General admission and VIP tickets are available through Click-n-Print ticketing outlet. If you are unable to purchase tickets online, please call the Click-n-Print toll free help number at 1-888-695-0888. Is that a poster that you posted a pic of? If so I really want one. All I can say is good luck, and hopefully there will be no issues this year and you can take off and roost the field. If you want to see some pictures of the rear suspension of that Alfa you had me check out at Montery Historics, let me know.

Good luck,
Will

Are you still doing the Datsun Porsche shoot out in Vegas? Like I said, I would really like to check this event out. Let me know as I am making plans now.

Also, that poster rocks! Sure would look good in the garage!

Sorry guys, the poster is a little photo shop thing :) not the real deal....

My buddy Dennis put that together.

As for the Datsun Porsche shootout. It's going on, but I am not going to be able to attend this year :(

Your not going to attend? Who else will be there? I guess I'll pass on going down if I don't know anyone racing.

I want to thank everyone who came out on Saturday, as they chose the right day to come out and see #38 go. We did well in the morning warm up and were gridded 18th for the qualifying race.

We got the green in the qualifying race and I moved up quickly to 13th, on lap 7 I was unfortunate to meet with the chicane on the back of the course. Going into the second turn in the chicane I went in too hot and caught two rows of the 6ft tire barriers at 55MPH. This ended my race weekend and will require some work to get my roadster put back together. I damaged the drivers side front fender and door the hood and front grill, I also slightly damaged the passenger front fender, only very mildly.

I was not hurt and the car is driveable. There is no frame damage, but my roadster looks a little ugly, as the drivers side and front took the brunt of the damage.

I will post the in car video and photos next week.

Again, thanks for all of you who came out to support me, I do really appreciate everyone who stopped by over the weekend.

Best,

Ron

Ron,
Bummer to hear about the tires. Thats all kinds of bad. I hate to see roadsters mugged by non moving objects (or moving objects for that matter.) I'm sure your car is in better shape than mine was after the Saturn incident 2 years ago. Just as well you weren't planning on doing Vegas in a few weeks anyway.

Good luck with getting everything sorted back out.

Thanks Will,

You know, you never want to do this, and it sucks, but it is repairable.

I will have the car back together in no time. Just $$$....

There is no damage to the inner fender on the drivers side, so I think I got off pretty lucky all things considered.

We now have plenty of work to do in the off season.

Ron,
You can look at it this way, at least it happened while racing, and there is something to be learned from it. When I was racing bicycles, if I broke something in a race, that was one thing, but if I broke it while I was off doing something I shouldn't have been doing (like riding off picnic tables) it was a totally useless failure. This is another reason I haven't moved up from autoX to full track racing. I don't think I'd do something dumb and hit something/someone, but it happens. At least you can look back and say "I can't take that chicane at XXmph, the car just doesn't have the grip." :)

I hope everything goes back together without too much trouble.

Will
