Rat Update:

I had a bit of trouble about 6 months ago. The clutch slave cylinder went out and I was not able to shift to any gear, lucky it was stuck in 2nd. I am still a little handicapped since I had my elbow replaced and a friend of mine knows a guy who just opened up a Shop not too far away. So I took the Rat down to Maddie’s Garage. John the owner of Maddies almost fell out of his chair when I pulled in, He too loves the roadster. 2nd gear always grinded due to a worn syncro and he noticed that right off and suggested some other items.
OK I am completely nuts and I own a beautiful Roadster also known as the rat… I did say I was crazy right!
The List:
New Clutch Slave Cylinder, Referb Upper Control Arm and new Bushings, 2 New Lower Ball Joints $$$, 2 New upper Ball Joints $$, Referb 4 Speed Tranny $$$, New Header $$, New 3 wire 63 amp alternator, New starter, New performance Cam Shaft, New Main Bearings, New Oil Pump, New Pistons, New Pushrods, Head Machine Shoped, and every gasket replaced. I have three pages of parts that were replaced.
In a nut shell, Performance Motor, New front end, new exhaust, Rebuilt Tranny.
Now I can hear some of you saying, You’re a crazy F*$#@ , well I am a Roadster owner. I know I put way more money into the car than it’s worth, or will be worth. As I tried to explain to my wife on the way to divorce court, Its not the money, it’s the Car. I love this Car. It’s not perfect by any means. It’s not a show car I am positive you can find nicer Roadsters out there for less than I put into this. That’s not the point, this is my Roadster. Tell the truth I am not the only one who talks to their car am I? With all the work done I am sure the Rat will be on the road for another 44 years.

Dave, you're bringing a tear to my eye....

Can't believe this car was once pushed out into the street to be abandoned!

Love what you're doing with it. You have to bring it to Canby and Blue Lake this year!

What an awesome story, I like this thread.
I was really attached to my first car, 1962 Karmann Ghia -- the Roadster is not all that different. Better, actually.

I sit up at night making to-do lists. I can't be the only one.
