That is really nice looking. It is super cool to see the before and after pics and you did a great job. I'm sure you'll have a ton of fun showing it off and even more ripping it up to the red line.

Great job on the restoration, love the red interior too….I wonder if you did all the body work your self or had professional did for you? you have a awesome ride.

Thank you all for the looks and comments, it was a looooooooooong wait for sure. To answer the question on the bodywork, I had a shop do it. I did do some of the replacing of body parts, but the outside paint was done at a body shop.

Just an update... Kevin put his baby up for sale this past month so I bought it!
It has a new home now in my garage. I am having fun running it around the Santa Cruz mountains area where I live.

I am sure I will need some help understanding some of it's various characteristics. Do any of you live around the Montery Bay or San Jose CA area?

About 30 of us are in San Jose! Come out for a fun run to Mt. Diablo this Sunday with a bunch of fellow roadsters owners!

Thanks, I would love join you but this morning something happened and it would not start up properly. It sounds like it is running on 3 cylinders? I tried pulling the plugs to take a look and they are black like it is too rich. cylinders 1 and 2 are a bit wetter looking, but not wet just darker than 3 and 4 but I am not sure if it is normal for them to be that black. All 4 are black. I am used to plugs in my other vehicles (not datsun roadsters) being light brown when things are setup properly. This looks like it may be running rich. But anyways it does not want to smooth out now.

Sometimes it seems to start and stumble a bit with the choke on but normally it warms up and cleans out and runs well after a minute or two. But this morning it just kept sputtering like on 3 cylinders.

I went and got some new plugs to put in tomorrow morning but am thinking that it is not the issue. It had NGK B5ES in it but I see the 311 wiki says to use NGK BPR6EVX and the EI Dizzy page says BPR6ES-11 (so I got those as this has a Electronic Ignition distributor and 12V coil that goes with it).

I did try pulling the cables off one at a time to try to isolate it but it was not obvious which one might be the cause. I am thinking maybe it is something with the carburators which I know next to nothing about on this engine. I also clipped a induction timing light to each wire just to see if it was trying to spark and the light lit on each wire.

I started it normally on Wednesday and drove it for several hours and it was running great and then did not use it Thursday. Then this morning Friday it just did not want to start and smooth out. It starts but stumbles and sounds like it is on 3 cylinders all the time.

A couple times in the past it started up and smoked for 45 seconds or so on choke but then once it was warming up it was fine. On other days it just started and did not smoke hardly any on cold start and ran fine the rest of the day. I do not understand what was different about each day. Just most of the time it does not smoke or very little when it starts cold and then the rest of the day it starts fine no choke and no smoke. Then a few random days interspersed there on a cold start in the morning it will smoke badly for about a minute. It has done this smoking and rough start maybe 2 or 3 times out of 15 starts.

It did that this morning after lots of use a couple days before with no issues. I put it up running fine and then this morning it would not smooth out after starting it.

Any ideas what the issue might be?

Could something with the carbs be causing this type of issue?
Set too rich?
Something sticking?
What is normal for this SU 2000 engine?

Also I have noticed on some days that when I turn it off it diesels and sputters a bit with the key off and then stops after shaking the motor a bit. Does that symptom ring any bells for any one?

I would like to figure this out so I can start getting it to run smooth again and start using it again. I have to come up to speed on this engine and carb setup. It is not a Chevy!

Check for a stick choke or misplaced choke cable first, it should have the cable casing seated in the little "cup" and the jet/nozzle assembly fully up with chokes off. also a bit of slack in the cables. Pull the cable, jet should go down, release and all the way back up. a "Sunk float", if you have brass ones could be a factor also.

Sure does sound like a sticking choke or sunk float issue. Did not see this resto post and very much enjoyed the before pics after seeing the "now" pics... what a change! Very nice job, and I liked the look of the red carpet on the black. Welcome to the group, you will find a great deal of support here and locally!

I agree on the choke cables, especially since the symptoms "shift" a bit from day to day.
Cables, and linkage check first!
