Hmmm, still a bit high.
Shouldn't see 16V on a fresh battery.
I would suggest that your initial diagnosis, the VR, is correct.

Now on the subject of the VR, I don’t seem to find one that would work on a positive ground setup. I will post the question on the technical discussion.

I had a quick look today for the spare that I have, no luck so far.
I know I have it somewhere and you are welcome to it.
The new item I used was from this eBay seller: -
https://www.ebay.com.au/str/vintageimportsinc
You can click on the "Categories" button and select "Asian Car Parts" to search for Datsun.
I'll try and find some info. on it as to part number etc.
They don't appear to have any atm.

EDIT
I have done a wee bit of research and there is a thread on this site (viewtopic.php?t=11578&start=15) which describes using the VR from the Datsun 410 Bluebird which is also positive ground, P/N 23500-10600.
There is one available on eBay, https://www.ebay.com/itm/185591200364?h ... e%3ADatsun
A bit pricey though
I will continue to look for my spare for you :smt006

I'll send you some pics of my original VR.
If you can not get one shipped perhaps I can send it to you from Oz?

I received the VR and mounted it.
Now i read 14V when iddling and it goes up and stays at 14.6V when accelerating. I'm wondering if it is correct.
Now i can start to enjoy this little beauty on the road!

Oncle-phil, that is too high. 13.8 at revs is the max and 12.7ish at idle.
However that applies to a battery in good condition.
After a drive, check the voltage at the battery again both with engine running and also with engine off.
