Is there a metal sleeve that goes into the gear shift lever assembly?

Not familiar with this, so did some searching mit der Google on needle pilot bearing vs bronze bushing. Not sure it really makes a difference on our old school transmissions.

I've never seen a pilot bearing just fall out. Shouldn't be that loose. I pack them with grease than push in a shaft that fits the bushing to force it out.

Mine has a similar spacer above where the shift leaver goes through the control bracket assembly, although it’s possible my shift lever is not original and this may have been added to make the screw threads line up properly.

I’ve determined that the Sleeve I found on the ground is NOT the pilot bearing. The pilot bearing was in the block where it belongs and was in there very snug. The sleeve I found just so happened to fit inside the pilot bearing and I am new to all of this so I wasn’t sure if the pilot bearing was even in the block but it was.
