In order to fit these XXR +0 offset wheels the PO went with what looks like in the pictures 195/50/15 or 195/45/15 , they look great with overly cut springs but obviously they are much smaller than stock . Combine that with KYB shock and cut springs and you’re in for a very harsh ride .

That being said the Bilstein/MY combo does sit higher than comp spring and I would say mine did settle a little from new but hard to say how much
Thanks for all the feedback. I like the tire profile size (which is a 195/50/15) so maybe stepping up to a 16” wheel??

Right now I have a 3 finger gap. Would like half that…

These are what I took off.

I’d love to get a hold of the PO but can’t find any info about him. All I know is his name is Steve and from Florida and he did the frame off resto like 8 years ago…

Thanks again to all that chimed in!!!

The big problem with cut springs (other than guessing the new spring rates), is that you almost always create a single friction point at the cut. This can quickly destroy your rubber isolators and seriously damage the metal seats.

How is that (cut?) right side even stable on the A-frame?

yes 195/50/16 will have the same profile you could also do a 205/45/16 but the gap will look bigger

This MY springs is 185/70/14 24.2" tires

Same car with 195/55/15 23.75"

This is MY/ Bilstein 205/45/16 23.26" when new

Same car 18months later with 195/55/15 23.75"

How big are your fingers ? let's say average size so that's 2.5-3 inches, you want another 1.5 that's Not going to happen unless you go to bigger tires, supper comp sprigs and a harsh ride

This is a good comparison with same wheels and tires (195/55/15) blue car is on MY springs and Konis, white car on Super Comp and Bilstein

Image

Last but not least this is 185/55/15 on Super Comp and Bilstein , it rides better than KYB and comp nut not nearly as good as the MY/Bilstein combo

Yeep if you want to to try the super comps and you don't mind paying the shipping you can have them. I just ask that if you take them off don't sell them. Just give them to someone else.

Hopefully Bump stops were cut (1/2 height)...or replaced with Short versions. Otherwise the shorter springs would not be able to allow proper travel.
Simple to cut Bump stops with a Sawzall when A-frame is vertical while swapping springs.
Someone mentioned that the ride height of "Comp" springs were lower. Not true. My springs are basically copies of the spring that was originally available at NISMO...very slightly shorter free length.
I can be reached at : mikeyoungsf@gmail.com
Springs are of course available directly through me.

As Pjackb stated and shown, you really have to add your tire size for context on the clearance to the fender.
The stock tire was about 24 1/2" diameter, and to keep your speedo accurate....a tire near that diameter would be required.
185/70/14 = 24.2"
185/65/15 = 24.47"
195/55/16 = 24.44"
205/50/16 = 24.07"
205/55/16 = 24.88"

I like a little more sidewall to help the suspension and am running 185/65/15's right now, but selection is pretty slim at that size. I will be looking at the 195/55/16 for my next tire purchase.....

I may run into the same on my restoration but for starters I’ll try the stock springs that came in the car. I believe you can test/determine spring rate and then try a set of coils with less spring rate. Maybe there are some progressive rate coils that will fit on the car. Quite a while before I go down this path….

I see lots of low stance roadsters on the internet. I’m betting not all have an excessively harsh ride.

Maybe when you see a lower stance roadster out here in 311s and Facebook groups you DM the owner and ask about their front suspension. Start collecting a good bit of data on lower stance roadsters (at least on front suspension) and from that you and others will get some great info I suspect.

The only coil spring type that should be cut is tangential. I can look tomorrow but I thought the roadster coil was square end. Here’s some info on all that:

I've had a Nissan comp suspension believed to be from the 80s for 38 years, now with Flex form mono-leafs in the rear. Regarding ride, I've tried every shock, and there's nothing like the Bilsteins. My wife has a painful back from numerous car accidents, and I have two crushed vertebrae in my own, and we have no problem driving for hours on less than perfect mountain roads. There's not a lot the average Joe like me can do to improve the ancient Roadster suspension. As I've said many times, the Bilsteins transformed the ride. No, not to modern standards, but soooooo much better. Tires are 205/50/15, no rub ever.

Just checked, factory roadster coil is indeed square type; should not cut and use it.
