So if my tank is empty and the gauge is reading 1/8 to 1/4 what do I adjust on the gauge?

Thanks

Here is a link that goes into more detail about adjusting the early fuel gauge. The thread topic is about the gauge voltage regulator, but then goes on to describe various methods to adjust the fuel gauge. Maybe this might be of some help :

Thanks, I was more referring to this post in this thread.

Slot at 8 o'clock adjusts the "Full" reading, slot at 7 o'clock adjusts the "Empty" reading. Similarly for the Temperature gauge adjustment slots.

That said, I can't recall what direction on the gauge a clockwise tweak produced (and vice versa), but do recall it took a couple of SWAGs to get it close to what I considered 'correct', and who knows whether it really is. The gauge was never really known for precision.

Precision gas gauge…when the car sputters you have 2 gallons left!

So, is that a spare, reserve tank? I have my EFI fuel pump in a similar tank, only mounted under the car.
Pics of my spare 67.5 combo gauge... I see slots, but they don't turn, at least with the force I was willing to apply at this point... are these what you're talking about?

Yes Greg, it’s a reserve tank. The picture was taken before I ran the feed line. It has a manual valve on the side that drains into the filler neck vent hose. Each time before I fill up I open the valve to drain the fuel into the main tank and then refill with fresh. Eliminate’s the fear of an inaccurate fuel gauge and extends your range a little.

Alright, time to dig deeper. I received a new voltage regulator and replaced the one on the steering column. Also replaced the sending float/unit. Now the gauge reads full although the tank is not full, not even close. I guess I'll remove the sending unit once again and reattach the wires as suggested and see what happens. One curiosity, part number on the regulator I received from Dean did not match the regulator part number I took out.

I don't know how those things are calibrated, but it sounds like that's the issue...

Hello all. Thanks for all the advice. The gauge is working. Not perfectly yet. Fine adjusting is necessary but it is useable. Now in my 70th year, I have reduced my expectations during COVID and just in general. The kid in the auto parts store could not find a listing for an oil filter for a 1970 Datsun SRL 311. I understand his being unfamiliar with old cars, but really, did I have to tell him five times the year, make, and model number? Yepper. Now I need to point out an exception to all this incompetency. Dean at Datsunparts.com spent an hour on the phone with me yesterday working through my issues. Um, not all my issues, only the car issues. I think it is fair to say that without all the Forum folks and Dean, I'd be in jail for arson and the car would be a charred heap in the driveway. Now it is time to write the sign for the rear of the car that says 'Watkins Glen or bust'. Or is that tempting fate? Thank you Dean et al.

Nissan still sells the oil filters and they are really good. I have about 8 or more for stock. You can even order online but I don't.

I found that the wix and fram have less internals in them. Nissan one was much heavier.

I'm sticking with Nissan myself when the time comes, $5.99 ea.
