Looks great! nice job!

That came out pretty good compared to where it was,
I had tried painting mine but had to put on too much of a thick coat of the paint i was using for it to look nice so i removed it ,
I may give it another go with the dull aluminium

With the amount of pitting I would have had to do some sort of featherfill coat to smooth it completely... didn't have that level of patience. In the pics the lines in the cover disappear, but in person, they're still quite visible.

But, the short answer is that it was the stripping prep for the plating from a poor plating company.

I'm sure there are good ones out there, but it seems the material itself is susceptible to that process.

If it's the Duplicolor/VHT High heat ceramic paint it's good but not much more resistant to scratches than their wheel paints , if you want more resistance get a 2K satin clear coat from Eastwood or you local paint store that's the best alternative IMO

I will definitely check that out. I did some tests with a couple of paints and clear coats in that post, too.

I was leaning with the Eastwood but every person I've showed this to selected the Rustoleum

I really do think once we're refinishing things, it's personal preference... I'm sure if I didn't see your A/B comparison, I'd be impressed with whatever you chose.
