I thought I would weigh in after posing the original question. I asked because I have always enjoyed the R 160 lsd's in my Datsun 510's. I have auto crossed and pretty much beat the heck out of my R160 lsd in my vg30e powered 72 510 with about 160 hp. with no ill effects and it is nice to have it there when you need it. I was looking for a more available, perhaps cheaper lsd for the roadster that would only ever see the power of the SU/U20. Amen on the money issue. I think Alvin posted he has 100,000 on his Rx7 rear end/engine swap, etc. and comparing the narrowing, shorter axles re-splined, etc., etc. may be a mute issue between the rx7 and ford 8.8. Just daydreaming and looking for new ways to spend money and work on the roadster!!

I think that should have been your original question :D

Is there a cheaper alternative to the OEM roadster LSD? Is there a cheaper alternative to the Mazda RX-7 setup (not bolt-in)? Is there a cheaper alternative than the Ford setup (not bolt-in)?

I have not seen one yet, that works well and/or is bolt-in.

Is the OS Giken install fairly straightforward? If the pinion gear isn't removed during the installation is gear alignment still required?

You will need to have the ring gear or “crown wheel” height set for proper gear tooth engagement.

The gears are set up by moving the pinion gear for and aft for proper contact by use of a spacer or crush washer. The H190 uses a spacer. Then the backlash is set by shimming the ring gear to move it closer or further away from the pinion. If you use the same ring and pinion the pinion should be ok, but it’s possible that the ring gear could need adjusting as David said.
It’s my understanding that If you are just disassembling everything for cleaning or bearing replacement than it should go back together with the same tolerances, providing that all the bearings are the exact same thickness. Does any one disagree with this?

Every ring gear is of a slightly different offset, so you almost always have to set the depth of the ring gear.

I don't claim to be a subject expert but I have not seen any shims in any H-190 differential and swapped around carriers to install different ratios and LSD's. Impressed with the accuracy of machining to where I didn't need to shim any of them. It seems if you keep the R&P in the original housing the different carrier just works. Except for the ones for the 8 toothed pinon.

No not the true, the shims are under the bearings. If you look in the shop manual the discus how to get the proper set up.

If it is of help to anyone, I installed the RX7 rear end, and my cost was $1050 to convert the rear end to fit plus $650 to do all the brake work and make it stop well. The $1,700 is in Canadian shekles, so about $1,300 US all-in. Note that other than machining the axles and having the brake cables made, everything else was done by me.
