He said he wanted to go over 60mph...
I swear you guys recommending four cylinders must have never seen just how HUGE the stock engine is. It's easily the size of an old Chevy stove-bolt 6, which it appears to be a copy of.
I'd say if you want Nissan, go L28, get the T5 bellhousing from a turbo 280ZX, then find a manual chevy trans/transfer case from a 4x4 Blazer and make it work.
If you don't want it "all in the family", Ford 302, bronco trans/transfer case.
Well, the blue oval/bowtie debate can rage on, but the facts are that the small block chevy weighs in at around 750lbs while the small block ford weighs in at about 450lbs. The plus for chevy is that parts are falling out of the trees for them. The late model mustangs have helped in some respects for fords, but they still cost a bit more.
yeah, fords do have the weight thang down but chevy doesnt need to be light... they have power and durability Anyways.... think about it this way, if you put a chevy V8 motor in it you can call me up and buy a part for REAL cheap
Chevy parts are cheap because they keep breaking! LOL!!!
Enough of the kidding around. It really depends on what Scott wants to do. I hear that you want speed and reliability, but how far do you want to modify? It may be easier to just find an old "box" bronco with damaged sheet metal, lose that body and swap over the Patrol body. You would get an integrated drivetrain and chassis that has ALL KINDS of stuff available, and you would be able to preserve the original bits rather than having to cut and try to make things work. I cannot recall any other similar sized trucks that would work for this swap - anyone else? Anyone? Bueller??
I believe Chevy small block is approx 550 lbs, big block 650 lbs, I could be wrong. Either way, the Ford is lightr smaller and has a front distributor. And either one is a PITA to put in
But, I don't care what happens to the original engine, it will still be easier cheaper and faster to fix what you got, or even pick up a replacment U20 or an H20. You went to the website, it's hundreds of hours to do it right. I've converted Jeeps and Dodge trucks from 6 to 8 cyl, and even that was a pain, and those moters were available in that frame!

well thats settled... he wants chevy!
The bronco idea is a very good idea, and if you do that Jegs sells a motor mount kit for a 302 swap into a ranger (im pretty sure they are the same thing, but if i say it on here it seems to be wrong ). http://www.jegs.com/webapp/wcs/stores/s ... emId=51803
I'd pick a 302 over a 305/350 anyday. The parts might be a bit more, but you're buying quality. Remember the old saying ''Ashes to ashes, dust to dust, if it weren't for chevy's, our tools would rust'' My buddy has a stock gt mustang. He ran 14.9 with a 3.55 gear ratio and the garbage aod trans. He also ran 9.6 in the 8th. His mustang also ranked in at a whopping 3,525 lbs with him in the car, he weighs about 175. My other buddy has a camaro with a 305 in it, and my buddies nissan sentra with a 1.6 automatic beat it in a race. 305 is a peice....Remember eventually, all heart beats stop...
Hey you said you wanted a serious off road machine, nothing kills an old ford 300 inline 6. The beast...

One of the problems there is that the Patrol has such a short wheelbase. According to the measurement I took on mine, you can almost stick a 510 body on it, save a few inches...
Do you want to section a 4x4 frame that would see off-road time?
The reason that I suggested the early Bronco is that it's wheelbase is 90 inches iirc. That is essentially the same as a roadster (89.8 inches), while it is only a tad longer than the Patrol (86.6 inches). Surely 3.4 inches can be accomodated by a lift kit...

What year is this mustang?? We had a 92 with a 5.0 and we could only squeeze a 16 out of it.... the civics saw us in their mirrors quite often.
I totally agree, 305s are POS. Our S10 with a 350 ran a 10.8 with a stock rear end and gears. And if you want go modified.... i got something for ya
The mustang was an 88....I believe the stock hp and torque was like 225 and 265 torque or something around those lines...What have you got for modified? A friend of mine owns a funny car
