small world, Todd's car
Hey, small roadster world, that car was owned by Todd Barker here in Long Beach, Ca for many years. You mentioned your fiance, not sure if you know (if my memory is correct) that Todd and his wife drove up to Alaska in that roadster for their honeymoon. (that was why it had wire mesh screens on the headlites, for the gravel)
Might be that the car wants to go back on your honeymoon!
Nice car, by the way. Welcome to the madness!

Yes, I saw that a Todd Barker had the car on the registry, pretty cool that you can track the car (as long as the new owner registers). We bought it from a man just outside of Camas, Washington. I don't think he knew much about it as he told me it was a 4 speed.....
Well, it probably will take us on our honeymoon (maybe not, lol just got a call from the fiance who was at the store, said he was at a red light and then all of a sudden smoke everywhere - looks like some wiring fried, and now it's sitting at the gas station. damn! damn damn! I want it back home where it belongs! damn!), but I think we are thinking of somewhere warmer, like Sedona, lol!!!
Well, who knows where she will take us?

It's like crack, Need more and more and faster. On the bright side, it's much cheaper than being addicted to Jaguars or Healeys.

Lady Pirate had to be towed home, but home she is.
I can't help but remember what Captain Ron said - "if anything's gonna happen, it's gonna happen out there." Truer words were never spoken!
Now the question is, does Marty my fiance try to fix it, or do we let someone else fix it. Normally, my fiance would be all over it, but in July he was diagnosed with MS, and somethings are now beyond him in terms of motor skills, frustration levels and the like. So, if anyone knows of a good Datsun person in Portland, Oregon, let me know!
I know Marty's going to at least give it a try, but if it frustrates him, he'll say so and then we'll look for someone to work on it for us.
Arrrrr, never fear mateys, the Lady Pirate shall ride again!

AARRRRRRRRRRRR MATEY ...... I would start at the positive battery cable, it might be resting on the exhaust header and burned thru, it has happened to me. If not that I would remove all the fuses and try to isolate the short.
Did he mention if the smoke came from the hood or the dash area, AAARRRRR, again. Sorry, no AARRRRR Emoticons
. Keep us updated on what you find and do ask questions, we will get the Lady Pirate sailing again.. Bill

Thanks, appreciate it!
From what I understand, smoke came from both places, looks like it blackened the amp meter gauge as well...she smells pretty bad right now, all melted plastic and other lovely odors...but Marty said he was going to stick his head under the hood today and see what he can see, it was pretty dark when Lady Pirate made it home.
We shall keep you updated on the Adventures of Lady Pirate indeed!
PS ~ Arrrrr, a pirate emoticon would be nice, I'm on another board (different interest), and there is nary a piratical emoticon on that board, either!

Sounds like the amp meter failed and the wiring harness is fried. That unfortunately is not an uncommon occurance in Roadsters. If you are lucky, the only loss is the amp meter. If you are not, plan on a new set of wiring harnesses.

I apologise for the Lucas electrical fire joke, I must have replied as you were posting it, I wouldn't have knowingly poked fun at a breakdown. If it's any consolation, I had to push mine home from it's maiden voyage, some fool only put 2 gallons of gas in an empty tank.
I am dis-assembling a 70 2000 this weekend, If any of the wiring harness is compatible and in good enough condition to use, it's yours.

No need to worry, matey, if we can't laugh at our troubles, what can we laugh at? Ok, don't answer that, lol!
Thank you for your kind offer! Still not sure if Marty is going to have a whack at this or not, his MS is really affecting him lately, and we are looking around for someone in Portland, Oregon, who knows these sweet cars, I guess it never hurts to hook up with a garage or person who knows what they are doing (in case we don't, or can't).
I have a garage over on the eastside (we now live on the westside) that I have used for years, very reputable, but as far as I know, they really only work on the newer cars, I don't know if they'd know much about Lady Pirate at all, or would even want to try. Never hurts to ask, I suppose, and perhaps they might know of a garage who relishes these cars...
And, what I really need to do is hook Marty up with this forum, he's the one that should be here, posting and asking questions...

Dave,
Marty had my son under the car yesterday, and Marty said if you can send the harness, that would be great. What compensation are you asking for it?
Thanks again for the offer!

Although the wiring is conceptually the same, they -ARE- different. Just look at the difference in the instruments as an example. The later model harnesses also use many modular connections (Molex-type) that the earlier cars did not. Not impossible to modify, but a lot of work.

Are you sure the entire harness needs to be replaced? It's possible that the ammeter took the brunt of the overload leaving the downstream wires okay. If so, then maybe some of the starting/ignition wires plus to/from the ammeter are all that need replacing. I think most of us will also encourage the addition of the 30A fuses - see the GM alt conversion notes.
Hope this helps.
Hmmm, hope you meant under the hood and behind the dash as there's not a lot of wiring under the car.Marty had my son under the car yesterday,
