I was 18 when I bought my first roadster in 1972, a "68 2000 in pristine condition and sold it in 1974, the most regretted decision ever. Restoring an identical car 30+ years later is memory test for an old fart but more fun than golf, ocean cruising or museums.
Advice?
Work just hard enough to support your passion!
Drive safely and respect your roadster!

Alvin,
I thought you were 15. LOL!!! Just kidding!!
Mark,
Is the car your friend bought a 65 1500 or 1600?
Here is my story. This may be boring, so you may want to turn bright lights on...
Back in High School, my best friend dragged home a Roadster. He drove a Midget, so I was intrigued when he described the car. Like the rest of the free world at that time, to me a Datsun meant a B210. Anyway, I saw his car and was hooked. I scoured the newspaper every weekend searching for one. Lo and behold, an ad appeared for not one, but TWO of them!! I talked my sister into the Roadster as she wanted an MGB, so we went to look. The ad said $1250 for the pair. We looked and tried to be serious, and offered $850. Much to our surprise, the woman accepted!! Now we were in trouble, we had to find the cash! We told the woman that we had to get the OK from our parents, but that we wanted them and would be back. A couple of days passed and she called. She said that she could not sell us the cars for that price (all the air goes out of us), but then says that we could have them for $500!! Well, we dragged them home and the oddessy began...
I won't bore you with the rest of the gory details. Suffice it to say that I have owned more than a dozen over the years and currently have too many (according to my wife). One is going for sale soon...

OK....
It turns out that the cars were bought by her husband as a project. He started disassembling one (the one that became mine) and the only thing left under the hood was the block. The rest was DUMPED in the seats. EVERYTHING down to the needles on the carbs had been disassembled. He died when the plane that he was on crashed on the George Washington Bridge outside of DC. She wanted them gone.
Well, my sister and I dragged them home and began working on them. My sister's car ran, but it was HORRIBLY rusty. Mine was less rusty (but still bad) but needed an engine. We found one that was reputed to be out of a race car and rebuilt it. It had a hot cam, .060 overbore and a header (no muffler!) and was FAST. I drove that car through my senior year in High School and through most of college. We got my sister a nice rust free 67.5 as her 67 was too far gone to save. Her car blew head gaskets regularly and mine overheated like a demon, but we LOVED them! Mine began a slow process of nickle and diming me to death, and one day I was PO'd because the brakes failed on the way to school. I came home in a mood (drove for miles downshifting and parking brake only to stop) and was griping about needing to sell the car. Before I knew what happened, my father had a buyer and the car was gone. That is the only car I regret selling...
Since then I have owned a PILE of roadsters. Total count so far: 3 64 1500s, 1 65 1500, 3 66/67 1600s, 6 67.5 1600s, 2 67.5 2000s, 2 68 1600/2000s, and 1 70 1600. I may have missed some...

I bougfht my first raodster last year, at the age of 35. My first Datsun was in the form of a '71 510 at the ripe old age of 17. In between I have owned 2 other 510 coupes, a 510 wagon, a '68 pickup, a '78 pickup and a '76 280Z.
3 of those vehicles cost $200 each. Wanna guess which 3?
You know, that Z was stock, but it felt faster than a 425HP Firebird that I used to have.

1st roadster
I got my first roadster in Bakersfield. CA when I was 15. It was a 1964 1500. This was all 35 years ago. I've owned several since then, but have longed for the first one. Kind of like sex only more rewarding. Sam
