Man a 6 speed coupe for $750 is absolute highway robbery. Great buy! Can't wait to see this project progress.

Small update:

Tore the engine down, it seems to be in pretty good shape. Definitely not the simplest engine I’ve ever disassembled, but at the end of the day, all engines look the same when everything is stripped off of them lol.

Side note- can someone assure me that my pictures are loading? I think I got the process down.

Hopefully you don’t have any extra pieces when you reassemble!

The biggest issues I've seen with modern engine swaps is getting all the sensors to work with the computer and making a harness to do so. This should be interesting!

Not a happy update!

So I finally got all the parts and plastigage required to assemble the engine. When I had torn it apart, I had no intention of taking out the crankshaft and having any machine work done. The cylinders were in excellent condition and the block and head decks had no warpage.

BUUUUUT, I somehow managed to roll a piston ring over which caused mucho damage. The piston is shot and it put this nice little gouge in the cylinder wall. I dropped her off at the doctors today, and waiting patiently to hear if it needs to be bored oversize.

Yea, I wondered why you took it apart-normally they go a long time...you might weigh that block while its bare-under 50lbs I think- pick it up with one hand.. pretty remarkable design.

Yeah definitely under 50. I bought a hoist-style scale to weight the engine when it’s all assembled just for curiosity sake.

That deckless block needs a special adaptor plate to bore it to hold the cly from moving or its recommend. Mitsu had / went to decklass 4 cly in 03 and you could not machine surface the head

I don’t understand what your saying. Had to make a run home to grab the bearing caps and cradle, as the machinist required them but he didn’t say anything about a special adapter plate. Also did you mean Nissan?

No I worked at Mitsubishi they have deckless engines too. Same design , it is much cheaper to make than a traditional sand cast block , less rejects
I dont know exactly on that motor but the cylinders are seperate from the block on a deckless block , you can move them side to side rather easy.they mount at the bottom with orings and a compression ring that works when the head goes on .
Yeah us techs at Mitsu wondered why you could not machine it too .they say because it has a slope on the head bottom that keeps the cly. From rotating
Id ask the shop tech if he knows what design type this engine is
