I'm really happy with my Canon ELPH. The small size means I'm more likely to take it with me.
Whatever you get an extra battery is a good idea, as is an extra memory card.

I also highly recommend the Canon Elph series. I have the SD300 and the SD400. I also have a Sony DSC-W1, and I have found the color far more vibrant on the canons than what I get with the Sony, as well as the old Olympus I used to have. We love the elph's because they are easier to carry and tend to be with us more often because of it. Some people complain that theyare too small to hold steady, which is more important than film cameras.
Whatever brand you go with, you really do get what you pay for, similar to roadster parts.

I've got a Sony DSC-T7. It's awesome. I love that it's so small that it fits in my pocket and I can carry it anywhere, so for things like car shows it's great. I think though for a vacation camera I would like something with a little better zoom. It does have a stabilizer though so I don't get blurry shots from shaky hands, just things that move too fast. Shutter speed is kinda slow.

Pentax Optio WP
I just bought this one http://www.pentaximaging.com/products/p ... ion--optio
It's very compact, shoots movies, rapid fire stills, regular and it's waterproof to 5 feet. My friend has had one for a year and still loves it for rafting, snowboarding, regular photos etc. Lots of different shooting modes. I believe they just released a 6MP version so the 5mp can be found in varying degrees of discount. Froogle.com is very helpful.
That's my 2 cents anyways.
Have a great day

I've been buying digital cameras for close to 15 years and wow has the industry developed!
10 years ago, I was buying Olympus's (Olympi?) for our field personnel, because they seemed pretty durable. In those days, they ate AA cells like sharks eat sardines. I used to hate Sony, who once fooled the masses that you could have a good camera with a shitty media (floppy disk). But, thankfully they got away from that. I just wish they'd ditch the "Memory Stick", which is the new BetaMax of our age and go with the industry standard CF or SD (or both) stoarge.
I bought several Nikons of the "G" series, from it's start G1 to the G6. A beutifull camera. But, too much camera for my tastes (size and complexity).
I currently own a Nikon CoolPix 4300. It's pretty dam good. It was cheap (under $200), 4mp is great (I'm not making posters!) the battery is care free, and the CF storage is not likey to go extinct any time soon (anybody see what happened to "Smart Media"

While I love my Canon sd300 and sd200, when Kate and went on our honeymoon earlier this year, we had a Sandisk SD 256MB card in the sd300. About 3/4 of the way through the card, the memory locked up and we have no luck getting some great pics from India and Bali out of it. We have shipped it to 2 different data recovery places, and at this point, all we can hope for is that the technology will improve and someday we may be able to our pics back.
This is not to say that Sandisk or SD technology is faulted, just a warning to transfer your pics off your camera whenever you get the chance. If your on vacation and you see an internet place that does CD Burning, go for it. I think it may also be a good reason to buy smaller sized memory, because you'll lose less. Though having a 1 gig card would sure be great for movies.

There is a photo connector ($30) easily used to transfer images from a camera to any ipod with a color screen. I took over 1500 pictures on a trip through Europe last month, and stored everything on my ipod using this method. Works great for longer trips, and if you already have an ipod, it's much cheaper than buying tons of extra memory.

In case anyone is interested, after much research, I narrowed it down to the Canon SD550 and Panasonic FX9. However, when you add an extra battery and decent sized picture disk, they hit the $500 mark. No way.
Luckily, the SD550's little brother, the SD450 has is under $300, so just ordered one from Newegg. Now y'all will get pics to accompany my non-stop babble. WHEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE!

My new Canon PowerShot SD-450 arrived last night. It was too late and I was too tired to do anything other than charge the battery, but tonight...
Be afraid...be very afraid!
