I have been considering that it 'should' be better to go with a thinner gasket than have the piston above deck.

Is it possible to get a head gasket made with a .030" - .035" compressed thickness? This would work well for all R16 strokers with flat top/dished pistons.......Cost obviously would be a factor, but may be offset by negating the need to deck the block......

I use a thinner gasket, from PAYEN AJ100 it's about 1.1 mm (0.043)pressed, and has a little bigger bore (90MM), I use it with the piston about 0.5 mm above deck.
But your idea is the thickness of a cigarette paper

Peter,
With those measurements you are running with a squish distance of just over .023" (.584 mm)......
Most papers I've read recommend a minimum of around .030", rpm dependent of course, but I would think the rpm limit for that tight a squish would be under 5000......You gonna be tapping the head again??
Have I missed something in my research?? Smaller bore = tighter squish??

I have seen other head gaskets available down to about .025". The idea is to have a gasket that would give a good squish /quench distance without having the piston above deck, where it could affect fuel ignition in the crevices. I know we're talking small, small, beans here......I'm just looking for efficiencies.......

The pistons were tapping the head indeed, but I could not use the normal gasket because it had a smaller bore, they changed the head a little, and made the inside more flatter for the pistons. I Look if I can find the pictures.

I did what peter say get a bit from the head , measuring piston center from the block, with a jig I made, and opposite jig to the head
I left like .028 between piston and head!!

Anyone found a source for the Payen AJ100 gasket in Canada?
RockAuto wants to charge me $60 just for shipping.....

Have tried a bunch of auto parts places and it seems Fel-Pro dominates everything up here......

Ok, it took me a while, but it seems the AJ 100 gasket is shipped over here from the UK, so your $21 gasket quickly turns to $70 or $80 by the time you get it here in North America.

Anyone else interested? We can get 5 or 6 of them for the same shipping cost.....

Don't know if this will help, but rock auto lists the manufacturer as federal-Mogul.

I would contact sales for Federal-Mogul Canada.

One site lists 905 761-5400

Thanks Phil, I'm skeptical. Doesn't seem to be any stock in North America. If they are manufactured there (UK), it still has to be shipped over.
One of the machine shops I've been dealing with says Federal Mogul is pulling out of Canada altogether, have already closed a bunch of their distribution centres, and will likely shut down their Ontario operations in the near future to operate out of the US.

**Edit: Payen is an Australian company, they list the gasket for the Urvan with the H20.....

Daryl,
That seems a bit steep on the shipping....if you want, let me have some info (PM if want) and see what I can find this side of the pond....

Thanks CSP311,
But I've decided to just stay with a stock head gasket, smaller bore for this project as I need to get this project done.

Rock Auto pissed me off last night when I was going to order a couple gaskets, after punching in all the information, credit card number etc., hit the button to complete the transaction, and.....Get a window which says "How would you like to pay the remaining balance?" I'm thinking "What Friggin' Balance?".....For some unexplained reason they added $12 to the bill with no explanation!!!... Keep yer damn gaskets!

If the AJ100 is a H20 gasket why not go to MotorPower in Kentucky to see if they have it or something similar?
Or any other forklift supply-

Linda, this gasket is very thin, so it give you a higher compression.

Lordco has some here @ $22.00 Can. each.......HA!

Linda,
on the gaskets, I've tried a couple H20 gaskets from the forklift shops - same as stock.
