Re: Engine Rebuild
Just curious. What does $5500 get you. It doesn't sound like a bad deal at all.

Re: Engine Rebuild
I 'd pay Rebello $5500 before I'd give just about any local shop a shot at it for half that... There is no substitute for experience. Fish (Scott) jus had an R16 Rebello stroker done - but I believe it is still on a stand in the garage...

Re: Engine Rebuild
I used cs-performance.com in New Berlin WI. Worked with Mel. He worked real well with me. It now is a busy time for race engine builders as racers are getting ready for the upcoming season so....
Sounds like there is also northern IL roadster work party or two shaping up!
Yes Tim on a hauser head the valves are air cooled vw most likely.

Re: Engine Rebuild
I know we replaced them so am not totally certain what was used. If necessary I can look it up in notebook I started. I do know that I have one piece beehive springs.jake7140 wrote:Yes Tim on a hauser head the valves are air cooled vw most likely.

Re: Engine Rebuild
Hey Jeff, It's my annual reply to this thread to check in and see if you have an update on your engine rebuild. Did you ever get it done? I ended up moving homes last year, so the roadsters took a backseat to that. But now that I'm settled in here in Cary, I'm getting the itch to get my 68 back on the road this year. Post a reply if you have any updates.

Re: Engine Rebuild
With all the conversations back and forth about having someone build your engine, it looks like a money pit. Does anyone have a book or video to take me step by step through rebuilding my own R16?

Re: Engine Rebuild
The Tech Wiki has the manuals to download and the Scott Scheeler books are good to buy.

Re: Engine Rebuild
I second the Scott Scheeler book. I just did my first R-16 rebuild. it is still on the stand, but will go onto the rolling chassis with the new clutch and massaged transmission very soon. Doing it yourself is very rewarding if you decide time is not an issue. I have another roadster to drive so whenever this one gets done is fine, so I can start and stop, and wait for parts without getting stressed. It is true Zen.

Re: Engine Rebuild
The original manuals are not bad, at least for the U20. I built my first engine using those manuals 34 years ago. You'll need some good tools, an engine stand, etc but you can do it!
