My bad, should have checked Parts Interchange in Tech:
"My local engine '& driveshaft rebuilder looked up the bill records for my early type steering u-joint and got the part# for the replacement joint they used. For early type use: Neapco part# 1-0170X manufactured by
http://www.neapco.com/index.php" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false; (68 Steering Joint)"
If available--

I don't have to be smart I just have to READ what smart guys like Mike, 23yrRebuild, posted above.
Thanks Mike!

And I remembered that I have a spare steering ujoint assembly, so I can get a measurement if necessary.

Neapco lists the 1-0170 as .938" bearing diameter and 1.500 inside yoke width with a grease fitting and description of "Spicer 1000" They also list the 1-0103 as the same dimensions with no grease fitting and "Spicer Steering" as description.
Both use inside snap rings, so the outside of the grooves (and distance between the inside of the yokes) are ~1.5" apart
Not sure the difference between the 2 specs, but saw mention the steering type are permanently lubricated

Part number listed is 1-0170x, maybe thst is an external snap ring which is what the yoke takes. Let's hope

Does anyone know what the lock-up is for a ujoint? In the specs on the 1-0170 ujoint the lockup is 1.5. But it is a C snap ring. I found another part used in MGs and Austens that has an external snap ring, a .938 bearing cap size, (same size as 1-0170) a zerk in the cap, but a 2.4 lock-up.
It is Neapco 1-0300.
Above Neapco is too large.
Precision 338 is a cross for Neapco 1-0170

Hold the presses, this may not work as a member measured an OEM joint and the aftermarket outer snap ring part may not work.
I ordered the part and will compare, and if needed will keep checking to find a suitable interchange for a stock appearance otherwise the inner snap ring style will have to do.
-------------------------------------------
Only the ISR style seems to work Precision 338, Neapco1-0170 etc
Cant find OSR style to fit.

Was there any resolution to this thread? I took a Neapco 1-0170/Precision 338 variant (bought at Napa locally) to a mechanic to press it in (68 2000), and he said it wasn't quite right. It's an inside ring, I think he was looking at it as if he had to get the ring on the outside. He talked about grinding off this and that, and i said to hold off until I see if there's a different part.
He also said the Zerk wouldn't clear the housing, and he'd have to use a different one. (It comes out of the middle of the X.)
Is there a difference between 1-0170 and 1-0170x? Or did I just get the wrong part?

No resolution on this one, other issues came along for the car, but I still want to get the part one day.

Ah. Mine's pulled out of the car and separated (although there weren't really any problems with it). So, I'll report back once I figure out if one of these things fits in my car.

Success! The local mechanic was able to make the U-Joint fit (It was a Precision 338 variant from Napa). Unfortunately, the supplied Zerk fitting was too big, and he had to replace it with a straight Zerk that will not allow greasing while it's attached to the steering shaft.

I had him fill it with moly grease, I'm sure it will be fine for years to come.
The aftermarket U-Joint has clips that go on the inside of the yoke, rather than on the outside in the original style. The mechanic had to grind a bit off the inside edge of the yoke in order to get the clips in. Only cost me $20 to get it done!
I hope this helps someone down the line!

You can see the straight Zerk in the middle. It will be hard to get to, but not as tough as replacing the unit.

On the left, you can see where the inside of the yoke had to be ground down to accept the retaining clip.

Back in the car. I added a nut to the other side of the bolts after this was shot, just for safety.
