Hey Peter,

thanks for your request - and sorry for the late answer!
At the moment I pushed the Datsun in the second/small garage to work on my Daily and some small things on some other cars (mom, girlfriend...).
Altezza got Eibach Pro Kit, 17" WORK CR-Kai, JDM-style-exhaust and a de-winter-polish (from grey to superwhite) :mrgreen:

Now to the roadster:
Engine and transmission are screwed to the chassis. :)
I dissembled the mechanic waterpump and built an aluminum flange for the water IN- and OUTlet.
So I have much more space for the turbo. For the flow I will use a EWP115 electric waterpump which will be placed directly to the downside connection of the 3-row aluminum cooler.

To fit all parts together I want to set the body to the chassis. I have to build surge tank because it´s no cap on the cooler and I can´t fill the system without it.

At the moment I haven´t much time for the roadster - hope to get 2 spare time weeks in may

Update:


The Rotary is in place and is fixed with custom-homemade-engineholders on the sides.
On the rear the transmission stands on the modified crossmember section.

no bushings at all. Will see if I need them when I start the engine the first time.

UPDATE II

I reconditioned the 13B injectors besides. New seals will make a big difference on a old car/engine. I assessed this on my Altezza ... and this car is made 1999 not in the eightys! (13B from a ´86 RX7)

Update:

So here you can see how the engine fit the body or the other way around ;-)

I think it fit´s nearly perfect. Shifter is max 5cm/2" behind the old position.
The handbrake have to be displaced 2cm/1", but not much work

it's so strange to see a rotor engine, the crank shaft is at the middle of the engine and by a "normal" engine in the under part.
Now it's looks the engine bay is almost empty.
But you make great progress.
Do you have to change much for the mx7 differential?

Yeah! You are absolutely right!

Now there is so much space...
but these parts are actually not installed
- Turbo
- MAF (which could be eliminated with the eManage -> MAP)
- Air Filter
- Alternator
- Radiator
- Fan shroud
- Spal Fan
- Ignition Coils
- cooling tubes
- EWP
- cooling reservoir
- Boost pipes
- Exhaust Pipes
- complete new Pedal Box

So you can see how easy it is, to fill this engine Bay :mrgreen:

That is a ton of work. It is all so strange to me, the whole rotary angle. I had to stare at a lot of your pictures for quite a while to figure out what was what.

You do know about the gyro effect associated with the rotory? I thought I would mention it if you were going to be racing it around. SCCA ban the use of the rotory engine in 92 when the crashes piled up .
In 79 at the Datsun dealer I worked at the owners 16yr old son had a RX7. he took it to the drag strip with 2 other kids . Leaving the place he like alot of people sped out on the road . a 50 mph highway really ,he was reving it thru the gears ,on the straight road 80-90 ? . there is a gentle curve on this 2 way 2 lane road . he crossed the lanes and crashed into the trees killing all 3 . There were oncoming cars that barely missed him that said the wheels were turned and he was turning ,but the car just went straight .
I drove quite a few RX7's and not slow, I will tell you and remember experiencing once for 1-2 seconds on a test drive and it was pure panic .

This is the first I have ever heard of a gyro effect from a rotary engine. I have a friend who raced an RX7 for years along with many others. You're saying that the rotation of the engine was able to overcome the grip of the front wheels for brief moments of time? Believe me, I am NOT doubting you or your experience, I have just never seen anything like or about this and am intriqued.

I can tell you I meant to say 81 - 82 on the temp ban on racing, 92 was the life time ? at Lemans ban
When this happened the dealer was closed for 3 days Like tuesday the shop opened again ,but the manager told us not to work -I think their the funerals were not done yet- all we did was set around and talked of this . We had the top Mazda tech in KC at our dealer ( the main mazda dealer was a block away and notoriously cheap on pay so he left and came to work there ) He was calling and talking to a few assosiates and factory instructors about the wreck and finnally said it was possible as the 21 lb rotors spin/ osscilate at 2-3x eccentric shaft speed .
The rotors are just held in time by the slides /seals and centrific force and the gear, in wrecks they can be jarred out of time and the subsequent vibration is extreme ,also not out of the question an extreme chuck hole or bump might have been the source or broken gear on the rotor/shaft ,also the eccentric shaft was not that big and some cracked . I am not a wankel expert
I remember the RX7 having wrecks at high revs failing to make turns on race circuits back then
I think he (mazda tech )stated if he down shifted to engine brake it becomes a bad situation where the crank/eccentric overdrives the rotors then.

They must have kept it pretty hush hush cause I can't find much on it. Race banning appears to be due to difficulties in classifying it vs piston motors. I did see info on early aircraft using these type of designs having some issues. Interesting!
