Garth311 -
Can you post the serial number of the engine? The engine # (on the head just between the number 1 and 2 cylinders) should match one of your plates.
You can check the "spare" plate against the registry, and if not "Claimed" can at least assume that another Roadster with that serial # was parted out at some time.

Also, the frame should have the serial number stamped on it, look on the frame, in the engine compartment between the drivers side front wheel and the starter. This also should match the VIN # Plate. No need to go to the DMV! (Hopefully

)

Good deal, your motor is original, and matches the VIN!
That's good to know. Your frame stamp should, and most likely does, match.

I am not so sure about the motor and vin matching... looks like the plate from the trunk has paint that would match that under hood. Very possible that somebody took the motor and the vin plate and put them on a different frame.
When it does come to registering, the vin plate and the frame matching are likely more important... At least I think they would be here in principle... Having said that, with all the stuff I've registered here, they generally don't look any further than the VIN tag anyhow, and unless you tell them, they likely wouldn't look for a VIN on the frame unless there was an issue.
Ultimately, out of an abundance of caution, I would register the VIN plate that corresponds with the frame number...
Either way, welcome to the club!

It still has the original smog stuff on it. That may be something you want to address.
What is the current status on the registration and what numbers did the pink slip show?

They will probably look at your numbers pretty closely in that case. Make sure your numbers on the plate and the frame match. I suggest not messing with the smog until after it is registered if that is possible. I think I would get the DMV paperwork started as soon as possible because it may take you awhile and I would go to CHP to verify the VIN when that step comes up.
Good luck, it will happen but I see lots of steps.
