Newspaper is the best for the final clean with glass cleaner.
Any heavy buffing will only distort the vision IF you manage to remove any scratch's.
This is true, I spent 17 yrs in the autoglass business. Buffing deep enough to remove scratches and pits will create distortions in the glass.
Thomcraft, can you give advice on how to minimize the pitting from and old windshield?

One of the guys in my Z car club claims to have applied Rainex treatment to his windshield to reduce the effects of pitting.
I'd think the pits would have to be very clean or all you'd see is freckles.

What grade of steel wool? Do you use it with water, a cleaner, dry, or with a lubricant of some sort?
Thanks for the details in advance.

I've always thought that the SOS pads were about the right grit (2/0).
SOS pads are made of shaved steel wire and soap. The soap contains rust inhibitors, preservatives, synthetic detergents, a pH buffer, fragrance and color.
They reduce to about 1/3 the size after the soap is gone though.
Most auto parts store carry automotive grade steel wool.

I was wondering about the SOS pads, I like the idea of the soap as a lubricant, but was unsure if it was too rough a grade.
