I forgot the brake brace, That may be the biggest improvement per dollar part available.

Definitely +1 on the brake brace. Even better to add that BEFORE the firewall tears!

Cupholders? Psshhhhh... Didn't some 80something year old grandma with shorts win stoopid money from trying to balance some scalding hot coffee between her knees? Heck, I would bathe in the crap if I won that much coin! We don't need no stinking cup holders!!

Re: What are the best modifications you've done to your car?
Quite the list guys! Ok, let's see...
45mm Dellorto carbs, 37mm chokes, cold air induction
Ported/Polished head by someone who really knows what he is doing!
Custom cam
Arias forged pistons, Total seal rings, 11.7 to 1 compression
Lightened rods, flywheel, fully balanced
8 quart pan
Coated header, NO flex pipe, 2.25 exhaust w/ bung for O2 sensor when I need it, turbo muffler, Monza tip
Custom curved Gary Boone dizzy
Jacobs Pro-Street ignition and wires
GM one wire alt, in-line fuse to protect the amp guage (fried one!)
Electric fan with adjustable thermo, 3 row rad
Electric fuel pump
Optima battery, moved to trunk
Comp springs, KYB gas-adjust shocks, Comp front sway bar
Custom made disc brakes (toyota 4-runner calipers with maxima vented rotors), steel braided lines, reinforced firewall
3.9 rear end, 280zx 6 spoke wheels
Things I've tried and removed: Water injection, MSD 6A, header wrap, flex pipe, cheaper Air/Fuel meter (not wide band).
Next up: Mono-leaf springs (composit or steel), shorty airhorns instead of the long ones so I can make a new airbox.
Best mod for the money? EI dizzy (the Jacobs helps a lot too). Most dramatic change? Combo of head work, cam and compression, followed closely (and perhaps more importantly) by brakes that work over and over. Oh, and finally getting a set of carbs that my particular engine likes. And cold air, and and and... it all works together! Best thing about it all? I did it, or did it with friends or people who became friends over the past 25 years, and that is what I LOVE about this car!

Why did you dump these items? What were the failings/shortcomings? (btw, everyone that I know that has used an MSD has had it fail)Gregs672000 wrote:Things I've tried and removed: Water injection, MSD 6A, header wrap, flex pipe, cheaper Air/Fuel meter (not wide band)

Re: What are the best modifications you've done to your car?
Well, since the Z and the Roadster caliper mounting points are different spacings, there is more to it than just bolting the calipers and rotors on. What thickness is the spacer? What year rotors? what year calipers? where to get the caliper mounting adaptors?

Re: What are the best modifications you've done to your car?
You're right,
I was advised that in order for the Roadster caliper mounts to be bolted, some attachment ears need to be welded on, drilled, and tapped. The Roadster mounts also need to be made thicker so the 4Runner calipers line up with the Maxima rotors. The rotors will then need the inner lip ground out for the the roadster hub to fit through the center, and the diameter and thickness turned down to fit the calipers.

Re: What are the best modifications you've done to your car?
I rode with Greg down to Mount St Helens a few years ago as we met a group from DatsunsNW. His car is solid, stiff, goes like stink, and could probably put you through the windshield if he slammed the brakes hard enough. He would repeatedly hang to the back, then blast to the front, so the brakes got lots of work...no fade....nada.spl310 wrote:Well, since the Z and the Roadster caliper mounting points are different spacings, there is more to it than just bolting the calipers and rotors on. I was so impressed I was was going to go that route, and have instructions buried in my mailbox on how he did it. Got a killer deal on stock parts, so stayed stock. If interested, I'll dig the info out and repost in a separate thread.
