The T valve at the front of the intake has a restriction in the forward facing fitting that makes the water flow through the heater core, unless the valve is closed.

well that would explain why i am getting so hot in the summer time. my valve hasn't been closing all the way ever since i have owned the car. taking it out, and going thru it, should remedy the problem then. just hope i didn't ruin the cable that opens and closes it.

I have spare cables if you need one or you can use the replacement inner wire from a lawnmower shop.

thanks Dave. will get back with you when it warms up and i feel like laying in that floor to try and fix it. i guess the console has to come out to get to the cable, and heater control valve, and right now, i just don't feel up to tackling that.

Ok, I'll bite...

Correct me if I'm wrong but if this is truly an "electronic distributor" wouldn't the condenser be gone?

I would assume so. Looks like something poking up over the edge, best it could be would be a pertronix, if it's a crane, the box is needed.

I am trying to replace the belt on my 1600, but there isn't enough clearance beneath the crankshaft pulley to get the belt off and a new one on. Is this normal? I got the old radiator out and decided to replace the belt, since it's pretty rough, so I have enough room to work in there. But the existing belt is just too thick to fit beneath the pulley.

Post a picture if possible. I've never had any issue getting a belt on, or any problems with clearance on my 1600. Check your engine mounts if one or both is bad that might drop the engine enough to cause clearance problems. Also check the belt to make sure it is the correct one for the Datsun application.

What Tom said, probably a weak motor mount. Floor jack and a piece of wood under the oil pan, raise the motor an inch and change the belt. Get new mounts when you can if needed

I was thinking it might be the motor mounts - thanks for the suggestions. I'll get a picture a little later.

Looks like the crankshaft pulley is so close that it's rubbed in the past:

Here's the belt and the narrow clearance:

Yep, that one motor mount is toast, so I assume the other is the same or worse. Also, has the transmission been changed by chance? If so I'd also look to make sure the rear mount is correct for the transmission. A 4 speed crossmember on a five speed transmission could cause a similar situation I suspect.

Tom, can you explain how you determined that motor mount pictured was "toast"? Trying to learn here, but it doesn't seem distorted, torn, or some otherwise obvious damage, as a result, I don't know what to "see" in order to compare mine. (Not that I have the problem in question.)

Same question, the pass mount looks pretty good.

It's a 4-speed, but I don't know if it's original. I'll take a look at the crossmember and mounts. How much clearance should there be beneath the crankshaft pulley? I'm trying to figure out how much of an issue I have, and if I should add some shims or something to the mounts.

The passenger side mount, the only one I can see, is compressed, and not standing at it's normal height. You can see easily vertical cracks in the rubber, and it looks "dished" bowing in the center from edge to edge. A new one has crisp corners, and no cracks of course. Finally, compared to a new one I happen to be looking at, not on the car, it seems much shorter than stock. Again, this is from the picture. I would definitely replace that mount and can only assumee that the other is equally as bad or worse. A side shot may show bulging out to the sides as well.
